38Ye have heard that it hath been said, An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth:

39But I say unto you, That ye resist not evil

In this verse it is telling the reader not to tell someone 'you are wrong, I am right' but to instead let them have their way. Not only that, but to give them even more than what they want (The next part of verse 39 is turning the other cheek).

Put simply, it says to let evil have its way, thus giving it nothing to oppose. And it is written, all things not of God die of their own weight.

Below are the same verses in the BBE translation (Basic English translation).

Mat 5:38 You have knowledge that it was said, An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth:
Mat 5:39 But I say to you, Do not make use of force against an evil man; but to him who gives you a blow on the right side of your face let the left be turned.

From Treasury Of Scripture Knowledge:

(Proverbs 24:29 [NIV])
Do not say, "I'll do to him as he has done to me; I'll pay that man back for what he did."

(Romans 12:17-19 [NIV]) Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everybody. If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone. Do not take revenge, my friends, but leave room for God's wrath, for it is written: "It is mine to avenge; I will repay," says the Lord.

(1 Peter 3:9 [NIV]) Do not repay evil with evil or insult with insult, but with blessing, because to this you were called so that you may inherit a blessing.
