Fifty years from now our grandkids will be scrat5ching their heads and wondering what all the brouhaha was about.
I fear you're on the wrong side of history, Tarheeler.

It's abolitionism, women's vote, integration, &c -- all over again.
Will we never learn from history?

I think tarheeler is actually against the ammendment to ban gay marriage. I read it the other way at first as well.

Yes, I'm against it.

And I'm very worried that my fellow North Carolinians will have no hesitation voting to constitutionally bar gays from exercising the right to enter into a legal contract that grants specific rights that every other couple has the right to have.

Same-sex marriage is currently illegal in NC, and licenses from the states that do allow are not honored. But, as it stands now, the law can overturned either through the state supreme court or a simple majority of the legislature, same as any other law. If it becomes a constitutional amendment, it will probably be decades before we can reverse it.

I agree. My kids keep asking me what's going on and why people are so determined to to do this. My 13 year old compared it to the resistance to inter-racial marriage this afternoon and said it sounded just as silly (made me a proud daddy indeed!).

I hope they enjoy the ban for time until the US Supreme Court slaps down state gay marriage bans and DOMA on the basis of violating the 9th and 14th amendments.

That won't happen with Roberts, Scalia, and Thomas on the SCOTUS. It'll be a few years before there's even a chance.

I think you're probably right, although I think we'll see DOMA reversed long before the Court will start knocking down state restrictions on same-sex marriage.
Since it's a federal law, there are several ways they deal with it.

Oh no doubt. It's not going to happen tomorrow or next year, but from what I've seen in the past 40+ years, it's a-coming.
