The atheist chooses to discuss their lack of belief

I am quite humored that the atheist chooses not to label their lack of belief in a God, but they feel the need to discuss that lack of belief with those who do. My question to the atheist then is this. Why bother with the discussion? In discussing religion who are you attempting to convince? You or the religious person. In fact what is your purpose for discussing theological matters at all? If our belief in god is in league with the flying spaghetti monster, why do you lower yourself to discuss such silly beliefs?

It's interesting.

In discussing religion who are you attempting to convince?
No one....at least regarding the existence of gods.

In fact what is your purpose for discussing theological matters at all?
Understanding people's thinking.

I am quite low myself.

Doesn't "atheist" suffice? What kind of label would you expect?

but they feel the need to discuss that lack of belief with those who do.
My impression is that it isn't a need but a desire.

My question to the atheist then is this. Why bother with the discussion?
As a one time atheist I would have done it for the same reason I do it as an agnostic; it's entertaining and sometimes even educational.

In discussing religion who are you attempting to convince? You or the religious person.
Probably no expectation of convincing at all. After all, I think most atheists realize how rooted in their faith most believer are, and how futile such an endeavor would be.

In fact what is your purpose for discussing theological matters at all?
Perhaps to show believers that their claims aren't as convincing as they would like to believe.

If our belief in god is in league with the flying spaghetti monster, why do you lower yourself to discuss such silly beliefs?
Because it's fun? After all, a lot of believers get pretty cocky about their beliefs, making all kinds of absurd claims and pronouncements, which they expect every one should agree with, and if not, then are deserving of whatever suffering their god decides to mete out. So perhaps it's a matter of taking such people down a peg or two.

You should probably realize that at least in my case, you're talking about someone who will have drawn-out debates about whether the USS Enterprise or an Imperial Star Destroyer would win in a fight. :D

BTW - if the Enterprise in question is the NCC-1701-D (the one from Next Generation), then the answer is the Enterprise. ;)

I don't think you're humored at all. You might want to think about who it is that YOU are trying to convince with your childish little diatribe. Hint: it ain't us.

I'm quite humored when the theist wishes to discuss something other than god. Aren't you?

I discuss men and I am not a man. I discuss music and I am not a musician. I talk about art, but I have no artistic talent to speak of. We can talk about things that we are not really involved in. People do it all the time. :)

Personally I find religion fascinating.
I would like to understand why people are religious, and to do that I think I have to talk to religious people, ask questions, give them my view so that they can tell me if I am wrong,...

It is not about convincing people.
It is of course always nice if people tell you that they see your point or agree with you, but most of all I bother with the discussion is that that is how I learn.

Why does this bother you? Are you challeged by a mind that chooses that god does not exist? Have you no way of conviceing them you are right? I would not mind them. I would rather see how they reason out the world! Perhaps they will see something I would have mised without their point of view. To put importance to the battle of beliefs is not likely to the champion in you to carry out the concepts in a great light! Try showering them with something that makes them to consider than stress yourself!

I choose to discuss religion because being aware of how it shapes people's thoughts and actions is quite useful in many regards, regardless of your personal stance on religion and religious thought itself.

Why do you wish to discuss (some) atheists desire to discuss their lack of belief?

The answer to that will be one of the answers to your question too.

Of course I want to discuss matters of belief with people who disagree with me. Out of the many reasons why so, out of the top of my head:

- because while God probably doesn't exist, the belief and the motivations do, and their consequences affect everyone directly or indirectly, including me and other atheists.

- because I would like to be talked out of my incorrect beliefs and it is only common courtesy to offer the same treatment to others. The notion that it is respectful to keep silent about such matters is one that bothers me greatly. I do NOT feel respectful to people when I decide to let them believe in what I am certain to be false.

- while it is true that I couldn't care much less about other people's beliefs about the existence of God proper, their ideas of what his will is are often meaningful, and on occasion downright dangerous or at least bothersome. I have every right to question them when they become political motivations, for instance.

Hi smidjit!

I think I can understand your point - and I think it does have some validity - I used to feel as if I was being "attacked". Look upon it as a test of your own faith; if you can, at the end of the day, turn around and say "I don't care what others say, I know what is right for me, even though others think it foolish" - then you won't have a problem with what can sometimes feel like taunts.
