It really can go either way so it is a gamble to contact an advanced race even if we knew of one. Just like if someone finds us it is hard to say if they would have ill intentions or not. I'm an optimist so I think the gamble is justified. The one doing the contact would likely be more superior and if someone found us with superior technology we wouldn't have much choice but to see what happens.

I wouldn't have any fear of that. Why would we want to harm another civilization?

Look at our own history. A mere 150 years ago, the US could grab northern Mexico with impunity. But as we've civilized ourselves, that has all changed. Physically, we could take almost any country in the world right now. Honduras is ours if we want it. But politically we can't do that. Too many voices within our own culture would object.

Maybe in some broken future where a twisted tyrant rules the earth, we might plunder the universe, but not if we are still democratic and civilized, I think.

Again an ancient civilization with advanced technology has already most likely been here. So again what do we weigh Hawkings worries against?

If interstellar space travel is possible, some one/thing, some where will have done it by now.
We are rather insignificant on the universal scale of things, and might be swallowed up by our sun before any one gets round to look at us.
If we continue to try to communicate, that time scale may shorten somewhat. But what might answer is down to chance, but is more likely to be some one/thing that can see a way of taking advantage of us.

If its a good idea or not, we have too little info to go on, though I expect as despicable and hate filled species such as us will be hard to find, if I was an alien I reckon i would have call bar set up, why talk to us?, we will probably end up killing them.

Though when I look around the Earth all I can think is that contacting aliens is a waste of money and resources that could be better employed elsewhere imho.

I'll play safe and say the only way that we will certainly have peace with advanced alliens, if there are any, is if there is nothing on earth they want or need.

It's entirely feasible, relatively trivial in fact, to look like us, but nigh-impossible for them to behave like us, because they would be vastly more intelligent than us.

Interstellar space-faring is basically at the far, far end of the "tech tree". It is more than astronomically expensive, if you want to make the journey in less than a century.

Come on. I used to be in line with the agenda of "poor, poor, pitiful, Earth - hate on all mankind." But it is patently f absurd. It is "original sin" in eco-friendly packaging...

and I hadda go back and question your atheology. Repent! Fostering such religious nonsense is going to force me to consider you :eek: a theist. ;p
