interfaith pop quiz

The Devil's Advocate
1000 coins and some frubals to the first person who correctly answers the following:

1) What does "Buddha" mean and how does it relate to the goal of Buddhism?

2) What are the five pillars of Islam?

3) Name the Hindu trinity and what each represents.

4) To which figure in the Hebrew scriptures do Judaism and Islam trace their roots? How are they related?

5) According to Christian tradition, who was the first Pope? What is is the biblical passage that supports this belief?

Go ahead and google or look around RF if you need to. I'm more interested that you know the answers than how or when. :)

(If anyone wins who doesn't want the coins (they'll get the frubals no matter what) they can designate a new member (joined less than a month) and I will donate the coins directly to their newbie of choice.)

Carry on!

lol! I shoulda closed this contest to other UUs, especially those who teach RE! :p

Maize, the rules were that as winner, you have to designate the newbie. If you'd rather not, how bout you come up with one more question drawn from any of the faith traditions and the first person to answer correctly gets the coins. (I will frubal you as soon as the frubalometer lets me again. ;) )

Oh and Kowalski, don't be greedy! It's someone else's turn for coins.
:p

OK, I like that idea, here's the question(s) for the coins:

What is the importance of the month of Ramadan in Islam?

What is considered the most important Jewish holiday?

ramadan is when you purify yourself from all of your sins in the past year, and you fast and pray to Allah. i think that is right. the most important jewish holiday is yom kippur.

Well, yes that's what they do, but why do they do that in that particular month? What is special about Ramadan?
the most important jewish holiday is yom kippur.
Correct.

Frubals and 500 coins for partial credit (and for responding). :) Frubals and 500 coins to the RFer who fully answers Maize's question on Ramadan.

oooo

ramadan is the 9th month of the islamic calendar, based on the lunar cycal, and this was the month in which allah revealed the first verses of the Quran

it is a time of self sacrifice and prayer, so that they can come closer to allah, all the while during their fasting they are reminded that thsi is how the poor live, and so at the end of the month they go out and give food and water to the poor to help releave them of theri suffering, just as they are beign releaved from their fast

this means that their is greater significance on helping others as appose to it just being a "good deed for the day"

at least thats what i think it is, i may have missed something :D

Those are the things that hold the roof up on the Dome of the Rock.

The three parts of the Lotus flower. The stem to raise it up so bees can see it. The leaf where bees can take a break. And the flower, where bees do their thing silly.

Actually that's Roman Catholic tradition. I don't think you'll find any other Christians (no, not even Orthodox Catholics) who agree with it. And anyway, the first Pope of Rome (there's a Pope at Alexandria also) was Linus, not Peter. Apostles and bishops are quite different.

Namaste James,

When I went to a Lutheran school, I was taught that Peter was the first pope. And I had just been engaged in a discussion with Katzpur, a Mormon, in which she argued that Peter was the first pope. Which is why I thought to ask the question here. And Maize came up with the answer that I was expecting. My guess is that the discrepancy rests on how we define pope. Certainly, I doubt that anyone believes that Peter was the first pope in the same way that Benedict is now, not as an official office.

That said, I am grateful for your correction. (Frubals and 500 coins coming your way!) It exposes the great variation within Christianity and that I have to be more careful with my questions. I wanted to include a question on Christianity but found it hard to do so. The questions that I could think of either were too obvious (known by most everyone) or too obscure (the point of the thread is to foster greater understanding between faiths) or not universally held. Thought I had found one but obviously not. :p

Hey, if you have any suggestions for future Qs for future quizes, could you PM me with them?

thanks again,
-lilith
