heaven and hell

Of all the examples of heaven and hell the 1 I like is this 1 -
In hell there is a beautiful banquet with mouth watering food loaded on a table.
The only way to obtain it is with 5 foot chop sticks.
People are screaming and sobbing as they starve because there is no way to get it to their mouths! The torment is just leaving them in a world with no way to satisfied !
In heaven there is the same exact banquet. They too have to use 5 foot chop sticks.
Everyone is smiling and laughing with a great happiness!
The reason -they are feeding each other!
I have a great love for this chinese view. I wish more saw life this way!
It is a world where I can give the goodness and share. It is how i operate here at the site as well.
So what are your opinions of this heaven and hell?

I don't hold to any concept of salvation or damnation, but I've always loved this as a fable.

Enlightner of the Senses
As a non religious person, one interpretation of heaven and hell i developed for myself quite some time back was the following. Thought i might as well post it again :p

As far as consciousness is concerned, one theory or interpretation i have created is that at the point of death, your consciousness slowly converges to zero. So as death sets in, and hypoxic damage to the brain starts, your sense of time and ur surroundings for example start to slow. Due to the stresses of death, the brain will start firing random synapses which would account for the 'life flashing before your eyes' phenomenon. This can be compared to the nervous response to huge fear, where the classic and un-intentional urination occurs. With these 2 concepts in mind, i can create a realistic situation of heaven and hell, where as your brain function slows and converges to zero, alongside your flashbacks, u will effectively life forever in your past experiences. (As far as the consciousness is concerned). This new dimension of existence lasting forever and yet only for an instant, could be simply classed as a good or bad experience. In effect a version of heaven and hell as far as the person in question.

My opinion of heaven and hell is that if taken literal is one of the longest standing lies in history, and if taken metaphorical pertains to individual mental states: “The mind is its own place, and in it self. Can make a Heaven of Hell, a Hell of Heaven.” ~John Milton, Paradise Lost

I don't hold to them either, but I do see a certain appeal in making the choice between Heaven and Hell an engineering problem to be solved. :D

You reminded me of something. Has to be shared:

Is Hell Exothermic Or Endothermic?

A true story: A thermodynamics professor had written a take home exam for his graduate students. It had one question:
Is hell exothermic or endothermic?
Support your answer with a proof.

Most of the students wrote proofs of their beliefs using Boyle's Law or some variant.
One student, however wrote the following:

First, we postulate that if souls exist, they must have some mass. If they do, then a mole of souls can also have a mass. So, at what rate are souls moving into hell and at what rate are souls leaving?
I think that we can safely assume that once a soul gets to hell, it will not leave. Therefore, no souls are leaving. As for souls entering hell, lets look at the different religions that exist in the world today. Some of these religions state that if you are not a member of their religion, you will go to hell. Since there are more than one of these religions and people do not belong to more than one religion, we can project that all people and all souls go to hell.
With birth and death rates as they are, we can expect the number of souls in hell to increase exponentially.
Now, we look at the rate of change in volume in hell. Boyle's Law states that in order for the temperature and pressure in hell to stay the same, the ratio of the mass of souls and volume needs to stay constant.
1) So, if hell is expanding at a slower rate than the rate at which souls enter hell, then the temperature and pressure in hell will increase until all hell breaks loose.
2) Of course, if hell is expanding at a rate faster than the increase of souls in hell, then the temperature and pressure will drop until hell freezes over.

The student got the only A.

There's actually a Hasidic story that is just like that (except it's really long spoons instead of chopsticks), and their arms are unable to bend at the elbow.

In any case, Jews don't believe in Hell, so I can't answer that part of your question.

But as for Olam ha-Ba ("The World To Come," more or less our version of Heaven), I personally envision it as like living in a dream-world, unbound by the laws of nature or causality, and shared with everyone you've ever loved, or even liked, or wanted to know or speak with, where one can readily converse with angels, and one is much more aware of and in communication with God.

That's great! Thanks for sharing. :)
I agree that heaven or hell is a state of mind... in life & after life.
We tend to attract & be attracted by what we resonate with... thus "many mansions."

Was it this way before the invention of chop sticks, tables, and certain foods in a banquet which were made by humans?

To me the very concept of a predetermined afterlife such as a "Heaven" or a "Hell" is pure mythology and nothing more. Life itself here on Earth could be discribed as experiences in heaven and hell. Nobody knows what comes after this life, if anything - and those who do claim to know absolutely that there is some sort of afterlife heaven or hell are only deluding themselves and others. Concepts such as "good" and "evil" are purely subjective and are not absolutes. Therefore, I say live your life here on Earth to its fullest and in accordance with your own self-determined ethics and morals.

For me to really experience heaven on Earth would be to discover your True Will and to relentlessly strive towards the actualization of your greatest ambitions, i.e., Xeper. And a true hell on Earth would be just to sit around on your lazy butt, living off wellfare, selfless, and impotent of mind and will.

Xeper.

The principles at work here, is pretty close to how I see Heaven and hell.

Hell (as pictured above) is 'forever lacking' and perpetuating that experience with seeming no end. Heaven (above) is forever fulfilling and perpetuating that experience because people are sharing / giving.

In a more intellectual, somewhat mundane, way, I see it also as:
Hell = seek, but do not find
Heaven = Find all that you desire to seek

while you question the "reference point" it is best to realize that the objectivity used was to get a point across that may have been somewhat harder with out the reference used. If it is as ancient as they claim I would believe the pholosophy is as old as chopsticks. Older I can not say!
