Hi all :)

I want to share a mini-documentary with you."The story of stuff", is a mini-documentary video about politics and sustainability. This video, is interesting, funny, educational, thoughtprovoking, and its ideas are easy to understand for everyone. There are lots of interesting facts in the video, facts about our poltics in our world, natural resources, economy, consumerism and corporations. The system of consumption is absolutely a system in crisis. If you want to know the truth about our planet, you should watch this video. Its a must see.

The story of stuff:

YouTube - ‪Story of Stuff, Full Version; How Things Work, About Stuff‬‏

Here are some interesting facts from the mini-documentary.

1) In the past three decades alone, 1/3 of the planets natural recourse base has been consumed, GONE.
2) The United states have 5 % of the worlds population, but is using 30 % of the worlds resources. And creating 30 % of the worlds waste.
3) The United states have less than 4% of the original forests left. 40% of the waterways have become undrinkable.
4) In the amazon alone, we are loosing 2000 trees a minute.

Which would be a remarkable figure if not for the bit where about 1/3rd of the united states is covered in forest. It's an especially dumb figure in the context, since literally all the actual losses of forestation (around 25% since European colonization) happened before 1910, and you're talking about modern consumption. We've actually *added* about 20,000 sq miles over the last decade and a half.*

*Edit: My figures are kinda old at this point actually, that's from 1990-2005, I haven't seen the 2010 figures yet.

T-Dawg

Self-appointed Lunatic
Saw it a while back. I liked it at first but after doing some more research, I realized that not all of the facts presented in it were true (ie, the part where she claims that only one little piece of the computer changes in each model), and it doesn't really present an actual solution to the problem.

She rules her life like a bird in flight
Saw it a few years ago. Interesting about our culture of consumption, but like a couple people said, some of the research was off or misrepresented.
