There is no atheism

If there cannot be a reason for our emotions, the time, the land(i.e. matter) then what is the cause of their existence? I bet any one atheist to dare try and give valid reason for his very existence in this universe. Only religion has a answer to this.
I got it. So that we could take fossil fuels and burn them up so that we can make money and create carbon emissions. It was meant to be because deer, buffalo and giraffes couldn't figure out how to do it. Oh yeah.

Religion doesn't have the answer for why we are here.

Imagine a ship adrift in a starless vacuum with no point of refence against which the crew can position itself. Some of the crew accept this but those that can't imagine that they can see a star twinkling in the darkness and are determined to get a fix on the star so that they can set course towards it. Despite the protestations of those who don't see the star the star believers set about turning people towards their goal by appealing to the crew members desire to escape the dark. Human nature being what it is the comfort offered by the star belief overides the lack of evidence for the existance of that star. Those who don't see the star find themselves being asked to provide absolute evidence that the star doesn't exist which they can't provide and face accusations of maliciouslly undermining the hope which belief in this star gives.

Reaching this star becomes the crews purpose even through it doesn't really exist just as Gods existance gives religous peoples lives purpose even through it doesn't really exist. Its a shame that we can't just accept reality as it is and work towards improving our lot instead of imaging something which offers comfort and devoting our energies towards that.

I've always said, "I don't believe in atheists." My reason being if you truly did not believe you would not even feel the need to rail against something. It would be just foolishness. Let them. You have something to overcome, that proves to the world that even you believe in God.

So hang on, because some atheists debate religion and religious issues that means they believe in God? Wait, how did you get to that conclusion? Are you ignoring the fact that religious people try to shove their issues onto everybody else, they try to convert people, they try to force their morals and standards onto governments, they try and push themselves on schools and into the public. Basically, opposition to religion has nothing to do with God, it has everything to do with the people claiming to speak for a God.

Hmmm...on the average, who spends more time railing against, Christians, or ahtiests. btw, is it your impression that all atheists rail? If someone merely says, "I'm an atheist," do you consider that railing?

You assume that anyone who identifies as an atheist is a liar?

btw, many Christians have told me that not everyone who calls themselves Christian is. Do you agree with that?

Actually, when something as major as religion is influencing the culture and laws of your country, then it is absolutely in your interest to have a voice.
For example, if there were a huge rise in people that believed in a Hippo deity who demands great austerity from people, and you disagreed, wouldn't you and the people of your faith stand and challenge it?
Yes you would, because it is playing a role in your life that you dislike and you wish to change this. That doesn't mean you must deep-down believe in the Hippo.

And here you are, "railing" against atheism. Sauce for the goose? ;)

There is a distinction between atheists, misotheists, anti-theists, you know.

Theist: "Do you believe in God?"
Atheist: "No."
Theist: "Why not?
Atheist: "Because there is absolutely no evidence of some supernatural being controling natural phenomena. And all religious 'scripture' contains fallacies concerning history and science."
Theist: "Quit railing against God!"
Atheist: ""

Atheists are generally more interested in truth than answers. But I realize some people prefer the psychological security of answers, truthful or otherwise.

Emotions help humans survive. (fear of a preditor for example, love keeps people together which also helps us survive)

Time is an illusion.

Matter is like the rest of energy in the universe, just slow moving.

As for a reason there is energy... Well firstly making up some story about a human-like figure creating energy doesn't make any sense.

If there is a human-like figure who didn't need to be created why would this energy need to be?

From what I remember of my reading of dharma, The Buddha said very little on the origins of the universe. It was something like :

"many aons of cosmic expansions and contractions, beyond which a root cause cannot be discerned"

Which I thought was kinda cool considering possiblities put forward by some physicists over the last few decades.

I think he also said the subject wasn't really worthy of much attention to those seeking enlightenment.

I think he also said the subject wasn't really worthy of much attention to those seeking enlightenment.
And the reason for that statement is that the answer, while interesting, has little or no direct effect on the everyday lives of most human beings.

I don't mean to be offensive, but that really is utter nonsense. I wouldn't feel the need to put the views I do if it weren't for believers regularly trying to make me think otherwise. I've had some knocking on my door only a couple of hours ago (don't they realise how offensive it is to turn up uninvited on someones doorstep and try to tell them their world view is wrong, and they're evil without their teachings? I'm going to ask for their home address next time so I can turn up as and when it suits me for some debate).

It wasn't too long ago that belief was the norm (on the surface anyway). I was brought up in children's homes, and in one was made to attend church on sundays ( until I rebelled and got the rules changed). The only reason I felt the need to deny God is that the matter was, and is, pushed on me, with the claim that without this I'm wicked. Still today his most devout followers say that without him we are evil.

That is what I "rail" against, people and their tendancy to judge others by notions they hold.

alright forgive me for being to lazy to read the entire thread (I've been reading other threads before I decided to join so forgive me that much now)

but to answer they initial question

I am agnostic yet if you ask me what I believe I will tell you I believe there is no god or that it is highly unlikely there is one.

I'm sorry but your leap of logic is a bit flawed. Why does there even have to be a reason for our existence? We just do it may be that simple.

@all atheists-
I have heard this story somewhere. It goes like this-
Once a master asks all students in a class-"does darkness exist?"
All kids are thinking.

A student answers-"no master, darkness does not exist. It is just absence of light."
The master is happy with the student's answer.

He asks-"does evil exist?"
Again everyone start pondering.
The same student again answers-"no master, evil does not exist. It is just the absence of God."
The master is impressed.

He asks a last question-"does atheism exist?"
Again all are scratching their heads.
But the bright kid again steals the show-"no master, atheism does not exist. It is just the absence of religion."
