Bad religious figures?

Malus 12:9

Temporarily Deactive.
Well from what the Islam members have said, many people believe that Islam is bad because of people like Osama. Is there any other "religious figures" that have given people a bad impression of religions?

Well I can certainly think of some. How long a list do you want? The important thing is to realise that usually such people are not representative of the religion they claim to follow. I would try, then, to separate the person from the faith and not judge the latter by the example of the former.

I know. But nontheless, Bin Laden is not true Islam. List all you want.

OK. A pretty vile Protestant I can think of would be Oliver Cromwell, a Uniate (Eastern Rite Catholic) would be Josaphat Kuntsevich, a Roman Catholic would be Archbishop Stepinac (Torquemada wasn't a particularly savoury character either). I think Rev. Iain Paisley gives his brand of Protestantism a bad name - he's not exactly tolerant. There were a couple of Tibetan monks who engaged in some quite vicious murders of Buddhists from a rival school (can't remember the names) a few years back. There was the Hindu holy man who was recently arrested on murder charges. Islam has characters like bin Laden and Zarqawi and I'm pretty sure you can find awful people in all religions. An Orthodox one might be someone like Arkan or Karadzic, though I'm unsure exactly how religious they were/are.

At risk of angering the Presbyterians, I would say John Calvin for his role in the execution the physician Michael Servetus who was burned at the stake for his anti-Trinitarian and anti-paedobaptism ideas.

Quite; the list is endless - as James said, I think the crux of the matter lies in the fact that what influenced the religious leaders was most likely not directly religion - related.

Pretty much all the popes. Well, up until the eighteenth or nineteenth century when they stopped murdering people.

Sir Thomas Moore burnt Anti Catholics at the stake, and the Roman:eek: church made him a Saint, you couldn't make it up.
