More than half of Americans say it should be legal for gays and lesbians to marry,

Even as a religious person I could never see the issure with secular marriage. It's not like gay people are demanding to have any religious body recognize their unions. It is an affair of the state and a matter of secular rights. What's the problem. It has no effect on the legitimacy on religious unions.

No matter how anyone feels about homosexuality, just as a human being, sex aside, imagine not being able to bequeath your property to whom ever you wish or have the person you love and rely on the most not allowed to be at your side in the hospital. It's kinda silly.

Only 53%?!? You'd think basic rights would have a higher margin of support than that, especially among young people (only 68% among young people? Seriously, we're supposed to be the progressive future of our nation, and 32% of us don't support the basic rights of homosexuals?).
53% wouldn't even make it past a filibuster!

Tis a relativistic world, so you shouldn't be amazed.
One person's basic right is another's taboo.
We all believe in rights that someone else would oppose.

Some perspective:

Most white Americans in the 1950s were opposed to interracial marriage and did not see laws banning interracial marriage as an affront to the principles of American democracy. A 1958 Gallup poll showed that 96 percent of white Americans disapproved of interracial marriage.
[wiki]

when the California Supreme Court struck down discrimination in marriage, polls showed 90% of the public opposed marriage equality for interracial couples. As late as 1967, when the U.S. Supreme Court finally got Loving right, the polls showed 70% opposed.
from here.

South Carolina finally repealed its state anti-miscegnation provision in 1998.

And the article says 68% of people under 30 support it (and that percentage grew over the last five years). I think looking at the trends for young people is important, because young people will eventually be the leaders. It's not like those 68% of people are going to stop supporting it, so I can only imagine how many states will allow gay marriage when 68% or more of the population supports it, and over time I expect it to rise even further.

Polls had consistently shown a strong majority (>60% of Republicans, most polls >70% overall) of the american public was in favor of open military service for gays, and DADT remained a "controversial" issue and was for a long time considered a "political hot potato" and repeal "political suicide". I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for states to change their minds regarding gay marriage. Both Montana and Kansas recently rejected bills that would have removed admittedly unconstitutional, obsolete and unenforceable sodomy laws from their records bringing their state laws in alignment with the decision made in Lawrence v. Texas.

man made laws change over time, pretty much all the 'western' countries will allow gay/lesbian marriage, man made laws always change with time, always have and always will, i feel sorry for the christians though, they are going to distort the bible even further to include gays and lesbains, too bad it's already started, priests and all recognising gay/lesbian marriages.

What do you find silly about it, eselem?

OMG, are you serious? do i really need to start?

if it was only silly maybe it would get away with only that, but it is sick, disgusting.

are you serious in asking me that question.

I 100% agree that there should be legal unity between homosexual couples, but do not understand why there can not be a differential. Marriage is defined as the unity of a man and a woman. What would be wrong with a slightly different name such as unified marriage? Maybe this would keep both sides happy?

ha ha lol, i was just waiting for you to say something along those lines, lol

although this was fortold by Prophet Muhamed salallahu alayhi we selam i find it sick that 2 people of the same gender can love each other and ask for 'homo rights' with no sense of shame, not even e little bit. what makes it worse is that people support it, what next, bestiality is ok too? (note, i am entitled to an oppinion and a perspective, it's called freedom of speech for those of you who don't know). personally speaking, i don't see any kind of difference to homosexuality and bestiality, none wathsoever. so now i ask the question is there something wrong with me, or with those who are pro gay?

Ok. Homosexuality involves an attraction between 2 members of the same gender. Bestiality involves a human having sex with a non-human animal.

Clear enough for you now?

thats the point, there is no difference in the action of the former to the latter.

are you saying that there is something wrong with bestiality?
