When I Grow Up

Many of us here on this forum are high school and college students... what does everyone want to be "when you grow up"? How are you going about achieving this dream? What did you want to be when you were a child? If you are already "all grown up", what ARE you? Did your childhood dreams come true?

I have wanted to be many things since I was a little kid --doctor, artist, interior decorator, model, teacher, web designer, actress, singer-- but only one dream career has stuck fast since an early age: an author. So, to work toward that dream, I have made sure to write prolifically (about everything), have my writing read (and critiqued) by as many people as possible, try to get published occassionally, and I'm pursuing classes that will require me to write (even if it is not fiction, which is what I would LIKE to write--any practice counts!)

How about you?

I've thought about lots of things...philosophy, politics, religion, history, journalism...I'm also interested in writing, though probably more non-fiction than fiction. Now I'm thinking about a physics major...but I've always dreamed of being a comedic writer for Saturday Night Live or The Simpsons.

Well, I still don't know what I want to be when I grow up! :p

When I was a kid, I wanted to be a Prima Ballerina...but that dream was shattered at age 12, when my ballet teacher left town, and mum wouldn't drive the hour to the next town for me to take classes there. I could have gotten a scholarship to dance school, but mum wouldn't be in that either.
My passion since then (or probably before then really, since about age 8), has been writing. I went through a period in my early 20s when I would not write at all, let alone let anyone read it...absolutely terrified of failure. I'm just getting back into the swing of things, and maybe one day I'll have that dream of being published come true. Even if I'm 60 when it happens lol.

When I 'grow up' I want to be an Olympic Horseback rider! In the sport of eventing, to be particular. I actually have a pic. of the exact moment I decided all of this (at the ripe ol' age of 12!), it's very cool. My mom won't pay for me to keep a horse in college, and there's no way I'd be able to go to school full time plus work enough hours to support it myself, so it looks like we're going to be taking a little 4 year break soon enough. I have mixed feelings about that...on one hand, it'll be the first time away from horses in 10 years (...12 years by then, actually!). On the other, it'll be a great time for me to get out and experience different things...I've never been able to live as spontaneously, etc. as I've wanted because I've always had horses to look after. I can tell you one thing though, I plan on picking up right where I left off once I'm out of school, and then it's onto the gold, baby!!

By younger, I mean doing the things I missed at an earlier age. For a long time (25+ years) I've dreamed of having a motorcyle and experiencing a ride with the cycle and wind as my companions (blame that on Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintainance). The cost of a cycle was beyond me or family obligations and considerations took precedence. Just this week, I saw that an entry price for a Harley (I'm not caught in THAT mystic) was $7000. That will be "do-able" next month when I start receiving Social Security checks (at age 62) and there will be money avaiable.

So what I want to do when I grow up is to be young again for I am still a kid with kid's dreams and playfulness.

Wow, I haven't posted in a while. I'm 16, so when I grow up is very soon. Well, I wanted originally to become a filmmaker in Hollywood. I would go to college for a year or two, then move to L.A. and start doing some indie work, then try to move to A-list. But now I want to become a humanitarian in Africa. I would like to join the Peace Corps for a few years, and then become a writer in Europe. Yeah, that's my dream.

Ceridwen,

I am sooo jealous! I had horses when I was little, and have taken lessons on and off over the years, but have been in love with horses all my life. Being around horses is the most therapeutic thing in the world for me. Unfortunately, at the moment I am unable to have one of my own, for I've got this 'sickness' consuming me called 'severe wanderlust', which, if I do not give in to soon, might eat me alive, so I've got to get some world-traveling out of my system before I even consider settling down, being responsible, and getting a horse. Actually, one of my dreams is to have a horse farm one day. I am already a bit older than you, so I may be old and gray when that happens, but I'm determined it will happen!

well right now I am a martial arts teacher. I would also like to get my PhD in eastern thought (philosophy and religious studies), and teach college. And also teach meditation and stuff. I would also like to make and sell crafts. That is about it.
