Is atheism negative thinking?

I think atheism is positive thinking. Trusting in the potential of the individual to make his own decisions. Believing that together, we humans can shape our destiny and make a future for ourselves.

It is through secularism that man becomes his neighbor's equal, as it is only once we have freed our minds that we can commit ourselves to innovation, inspiration, and real kindness. After all if you're only being nice to someone because you want into heaven, you're ultimately selfish and uncaring.

Some atheists choose to be because they don't care for God and they don't care to be good people.
I haven't met one of those yet.
You must run with a much rougher crowd.

If believing in God is positive, & believing in Hell is negative.
Then atheism must be analogous to electrical ground.....a big zero.....or neutral.

Belief in god doesn't make someone a good person.

Hitler was all about religion.

Doesn't mean not following religion makes someone good either. But religion doesn't have a 100% success rate

An athiest could believe in an afterlife, and not believe in a deity.

[I believe in other dimensions, but not a deity]

Except that atheists are as aware of sorrow and as capable of empathy and caring as anyone else, so no, we are not neutral in that sense.

If anything, I'm convinced that some people are in fact more moral if they don't attempt to believe in God.

I've heard that many people say religious people are sometimes more likely to survive an operation or illness because they are more optimistic, and atheists don't as much because they are pessimistic. I don't think that is true because if you are truly prepared for death :thud: and :eek: no afterlife, reincarnation, nirvana, or any other supernatural consiousness, that means religion is more of a wishful thinking thing. Maybe atheists are realists and theists are idealists. Tell me your thoughts!

I resent the fact that people seem to think that atheists must inherently be pessimistic. I find much more joy in rational thought and the natural order of the world and discovering why things are the way they are as opposed to rationally unfulfilled subjugation to a higher power. You will notice from http://www.oas.samhsa.gov/2k7/depression/occupation.htm that engineers and scientists have the lowest rates of depression. My theory is that these people lead more mentally rewarding careers. While I cannot find a source to back my claim right now, engineers and scientists generally do not tend to be religious.

I don't believe in God, I work for God. I'm an atheist, pauline isrealite; soon I'll be a Jew...

Negative thinking? No. Negative is not thinking. ;)

Atheism is a more liberated way of thinking because without religion Atheists have one less thing in the way of making factually informed decisions. Unfortunately Atheist are still subject to the barrage of political pressures in the world and still need to tred carefully lest they become the mouthpiece of a political idealogy.

Sounds like a pretty relative question. I certainly experience nothing negative about atheism past the fact that it does negate the idea of God. I couldn't answer if such thinking has negative effects on others.

I am an atheist so far but I'd imagine in theistic terms:

Theism = Positive

Atheism = 0

Theistic Satanism = Negative

This is no offence to Theistic Satanists, I don't mind them at all. But that's how I'd think if I were a true "lover" of "god".

We the idea of negative is a subjective perception of someones beliefs. The idea of afterlife or the rejection of it is the perspective of the believer. I believe many athiest who reject God or gods mainly reject the idea of God or gods and the metaphysical ideas along with that. I see nothing wrong with it. In the end we all know the truth individually.

I don't think you can really attribute positive and negative in that way, it depends so much on how people engage with their view of existence and what they draw from it. I've met happy and unhappy believers and unbelievers.
