VOR, collective bargaining with a private company is very different than negotiating with the state. I believe the benefit package differential between state employees and the private sector weighs this fact clearly.
I don't see it as different in any material way, Rick. The fact that the employer is the state is, in my opinion, immaterial. If the costs of providing a retirement, or health care, or any other benefit that they acquire through negotiation is to be passed on to the end user of their services, how is that any different than if they were employees of a private sector company? You and I both know that those costs are passed along in industry - why would anyone expect them not to be just because the employer is a government entity?

I'm glad you asked scarecrow.

A private company would have never agreed to the sweetheart contracts state employees get. I believe the only reason the state made the deals they did was to get the campaign contributions from the unions.

Lets change gears here and permit me to ask you a question.

If you where governor of a bankrupt state, I would bet you would raise taxes on the evil corporations that reside in your state. That would increase the revenues to pay the sweetheart contracts except the corporations would vote with their feet.

In light of this situation, which would be better, keep taxes low and retain jobs in your state and pay your employees a benefit package more in line with your private sector or do you have a better idea?

If I may add, these low life tax dodging corporations do employ folks who also pay taxes to the state and when they leave to find a better tax environment in another state, not only will you have less revenue but also the liability of paying unemployment to the folks who just lost jobs.
