Why are Hindus fanatical?

Namaste,

New member, first post.:)

I believe that Hinduism is universalism - all paths are valid and lead to the truth. But lately, Hindus are becoming more and more fanatical. They believe in nationalism, capitalism, and concepts which go against Hindu Dharma. Of course, they mindlessly attack other religions. Even great figures like Jesus and Prophet Moahammed have not been spared. Add to that the enormous violence perpetrated by Hindus on minorities.

My question is: what's the reason for this new breed of Hindus, Hindus who are violent, vulgar, and know little about their religion?

I suspect India's cold war with Pakistan is part of it.

It is definitely sad to see so many like this nowadays, and perhaps such people feel that Hinduism is in danger, and they're trying to defend it.

Welcome!

Namaste, Gandhi-ji. Welcome to the forums.

Hindus, alas, have recently been discovered to be Human beings -- with all the weaknesses and social pathology that entails.
Humans, as a rule, do not react well to changes and new ideas that threaten their lifestyles, traditions or world-view.

That is correct! And thanks for the sweet words.

Do not generalise. What percentage of Hindus are fanatic?
They believe in nationalism, capitalism, and concepts which go against Hindu Dharma.

Nationalism and Capitalism does not go against Hindu Dharma.(IMO)
Of course, they mindlessly attack other religions.

Will discuss this when we have free time to discuss anything "mindless".
Even great figures like Jesus and Prophet Moahammed have not been spared.

I request you to prove that Jesus and Prophet Mohammed considered Hinduism as "great" in their lifetime.
Add to that the enormous violence perpetrated by Hindus on minorities.

Sorry, this is a politically motivated statement (with a biased opinion against a particular community). I would refrain from answering it here on this forum.
My question is: what's the reason for this new breed of Hindus, Hindus who are violent, vulgar, and know little about their religion?

As per my "personal" opinion and analysis, "some" Hindus have stopped being lenient as they have realised that being weak has cost them 80% of their land (they used to rule , in the known history, from Persia-Iran to Indonesia), 80% of people ( after forceful conversion to Islam and lured conversion to Christianity), 80% of wealth (Arabs to Europeans, all looted us for 1000 years). They want to defend the remaining 20% at the least.
Their ways are however much debatable.
(My personal analysis is based on the literature I read, which was published by the right wing Hindu nationalist groups)

You are great, Mahatma!

I agree with Milind's post. Among all the major religions, Hindusm still remains one of the most tolerant of others. Fanaticism has been on the rise exponentially in other major religions compared to Hinduism.

There's a difference between fanatic and enthusiastic. Here's something to consider as one reason for the rise in a sense of strongly defending the faith.

85% of all money donated to temples is taken by the government to be used in regular coffers, helping build roads, etc., but also churches and mosques.

0% of money donated to mosques, churches is taken by the government

Some (not all of course) Hindus view such actions as discriminatory against the majority, that in the mindset of universalism, respect for others, etc, the Hindus have gone too far, and need to put a stop to it, as they watch such things as temples disappear, and families broken own due to conversion.

Don't get me wrong. I condemn violence of any kind. But there are a lot of factors at play here.

I agree that Hinduism has started to produce fundamentalists. In every religion all across the world, (Except Europe because of its secular nature) there has been a raise in religious extremism. Even Buddhism has had problems with extremism in places like Sri Lanka.

Hindu Nationalism has many causes that are not even covered in the West. Today if you pick up western news organization you might hear about the crazy Hindu fanatics attacking peaceful Christians. The truth is very different then this, it is a two way street. Christians have pumped in Billions of dollars into India to covert Hindu's. Over the years Hindu's have been shown to be a very hard group of people to convert. So some of these missions have changed their strategies to become much more aggressive. In poor areas like Orissa when a poor person converts with a promise of a well paying job they are moved a way from their extended family to a Christian only village. Contact has been made difficult. This has angered many Hindus.

There has been also been Christian Terrorism in areas of North-East Indian. In state of Nagaland Hindu's have been ethnicity cleansed out of large areas of the state. These groups have also killed Hindus who practice their faith.
Could you just imagine the response of Christians in America if they were ethnicity cleansed out of an area in side our boarders.

Here is some info on Christian Terrorism in NE India

BBC News | SOUTH ASIA | 'Church backing Tripura rebels'

Assam Times - Christianity threat looms over Bhuvan Pahar

I see the Hindu group VHP as a part of the problem in the Assam Times site. Still it will let you see how there is a problem.

I am not defending violence or extremism in any way. There is just no reason for it. Yet to understand it and change it you must understand its cause.

Most Americans can't imagine that In India Hindu religious organizations are taxed and Christian and Muslim are not. Also that it was common practice for Indian Tax dollars was used to send Muslims on the Hajj pilgrimage to Mecca. I do admire this type of open minded policy still if it is making people mad it might not be fair. This might be something the Indian Government should take a look at.

Thanks for the welcome :) - and for the replies.

Although I do not agree with the rationalizations, I do respect your views.

I view my beliefs as taking into account human nature not a rationalization. I am against all forms of violence even when, especially when, it is caused by people of my own faith.

I wasn't even aware of that. It makes it more understandable why Indian Hindus bear grudges against Abrahamic religions.

Who are you talking to?

Sorry I didn't make myself clear. Some of the members have given their reasons as to why Hindus do the things they do. What I am saying is, such reasons are mere excuses for fanatics to attack the minorities. For instance, Vinayak mentioned the temple money issue, how govt. controls it. Now I honestly don't see how that excuses the fanatics to attack minorities, burn their shops, molest women etc. If Hindus are really outraged, shouldn't they protest the govt. (nonviolently) rather than attacking innocent people?

As you can see, violent people will always come up with endless justifications as to why they're violent.

from sabarimala temple alone kerala government receives a total revenue of more than 3000 crore rupees every year(in 45 days) and The whole expense to manage temples under devaswom board is rs 80 lack.

The credit goes to kerala goverment(including communists) for marketing 'god miracles' to attract pilgrims
Lakhs of pilgrims throng Sabarimala every January to witness three glitters on the next hill. Though critics have been trying to shatter the myth with explanations ranging from celestial alignment to government-sponsored conspiracies, Ayyappa devotees blindly worshipped the light.

“The TDB has no role in lighting Makara Vilakku. It happens on a hill far from the temple. The board has never advertised that the light was a miracle,” Guptan said.
The tantric was forced to comment on the issue after the former president of TDB, which manages the Sri Dharma Sastha Temple, said the light was lit by officials. “The devaswom board has been functioning with the help of the police and other departments. The Makara Vilakku is also done with the police and other people,” G Raman Nair told a television channel.
Sabarimala authorities say ‘divine light’ is man-made

Attack and rape on innocent people is always unjustified, and a crime against Humanity.

My question to you is who are the real violent people. Every year a few 100 people die in skirmishes between religious groups in India while millions and millions die because the rich ( I define the rich as the top 20% of humanity who makes over $10.00 a day) use up all the resources of the world. Today I just took my son out to eat and spent $30.00 on a meal. This would have feed over 100 people in many places in the world. If every person on the globe lived like an American it would take 4 earths to provide all the resources to support that life style. It is real easy to judge others in our warm homes and full stomachs. It is grinding poverty that is the real cause of human suffering in our world.
