How can we teach open mindness?

By having some moral and spiritual teachings for children, and youth in school, that are fundamental for open-mindedness. This can be a collection of good teachings from various religions and other non-religious moral educators which is not set to bias any religion or belief over any other ones, but rather aimed to teach about having a good and open-minded character.

I think whichever way you look at it, a dogma will always form. The relativists position is also a dogma - that everything is relative. This is a closed system of philosophy that does not admit of absolute truths. The materialists position is also a closed system of philosophy that does not admit of anything other than material in reality.

In the end you cannot help but not have a position on reality. And as everybody is going to form a different position, you cannot avoid coming into conflict. However, some positions are clearly wrong. If I say, "The earth is flat" it is not equally as valid as "the earth is spherical" Therefore I am going to assert the latter dogmatically and refuse to listen to the former.

Namaste friends,

Open-mindedness is not something you can really teach, it is something that must be cultivated. One can tell their children that they should be open-minded, but just telling them that isn't enough to help them understand why. They need to understand that all people are connected, that separation is an illusion created by physical images, and that when they are intolerant and hurtful they are actually hurting themselves, they're inflicting damage to the universal oneness.

Instead of just teaching kids of one religion in school they should be taught at least the 10 big ones, not in detail, but they should know of them. Then they would very early be taught about different thoughts and beliefs, and they might not feel so superior to other religions. But i dont think you can help people past the age of 15.

But i think the only way to open-mindness is education.

Getting frustrated again but then it hit me.

Look at all the tyrants and evil humans have done from a view that excludes religion, country, money etc what do they have in common. One thing stands out. They were all closed minded. There view was the only view. Followers will always follow leaders. Is there a way to teach open mindness in schools to insure it in adults? Is there a way to open a closed mind? Is this just the nature of humans and we are stuck with it?

Any suggestions, also do you see anything else in common with the tyrants you know.

the only time our minds will be fully open is when we are rested

Friend steveoh,

Can you explain WHY?????

Love & rgds

I took it as such. As long as we a seaching we are trying to prove a point. The mind will be closed to things that are not helpful towards the point or path. Once you are satisfied, enlightened you no longer need to search your mind is now at rest and you can finally accept all.

Lets see how steveoh see's it though.

Friend bobhikes,

Yes, thoughts are walls /boundaries one creates for themselves or else like existence the mind is expandable till eternity or rather when the mind [thoughts] is kept aside one is one with existence which is eternal / limitless.

take a psychiatrist or your closest friends for an example, your mind is open and you release everything without "worry", every social situation should involve expressing yourself, and a place where everyone takes off their masks.

in my opinion all religions are opinions from an observing mind. popular religions should jsut be as a "story", everyone has a mind and everyone should have their own religion.

Always know that there may be something in a way of better information that will alter your understanding. There will always be gaps in knowledge. But do not use that old stop gap. That stop gap called god. Go and acquire all the knowledge you can and do not plug the gaps.
