Purpose in Life

Do you believe that we all have our own distinct purpose in life? Is each of us here for a specific reason? Or, are we just here? Have you found your purpose in life? How did you find it?

I'm just happy to be here.
Amen to that!

I have come to believe that my purpose in this life was to love........

Love God
Love myself
Love my family
Love my neighbor.

Love, yeah, that's the ticket!

I'm still passively looking for my purpose I think, which is fine for me right now. At this point in my life I'm trying to not be so concerned with finding 'purpose'...I think the more you actively seek it the more it tends to allude you. I gotta just let it come to me when the time is right I guess.

I wear a ring on my ring finger of my right hand (haven't taken it off in about 2 years...lol, the normal response to that is 'eeewww'). It's sort of a wedding ring to me...it's two threads of silver twisted together. For me, one thread represents that I'm married to myself, first and foremost, and the second thread represents that I'm married to those that I love. That's my basic philosophy--be true to yourself, and be true to your friends, and everything else will fall into place.

There is purpose in this life. God didn't send us here for nothing. He wants us to be like Him. Now, many of you may think that's blasphemy. I'm here to tell you that we are to become like God; and we can. If we are not to become like God, then why does Christ command in Matthew 5:48 "Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect."

"For behold, this is my work and my glory -- to bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of man." (Moses 1:39; The Pearl of Great Price)

In John 17, The Intercessory Prayer, the Lord, Jesus Christ, prays to the Father that He will bless the apostles and all those that believe on their words that they may become one, as the Lord, Jesus Christ, and the Father are one.

We can keep the commandments and have the Spirit be with us. That will bring us closer to God. (Note: perfection cannot be acquired in its entirety while in this mortal tabernacle, or the physical state in which we live now. We will make mistakes, but the Lord has atoned for our sins that if we believe on His name and repent and keep His commandments, they will be forgiven.) (Side note: The Lord prayed that we'd become one as He and the Father are one. Take a look at the word atonement. You get the words at-one-moment. The atonement, throught Jesus Christ, is how we become "one" with Them. Very Interestin!!!)

Another purpose for this life is to obtain a body. Our spirits, for we are spirit children of our Father in Heaven, came down to this earth to obtain a body. Christ was resurrected. He overcame death. All men (referring to mankind) will be resurrected. We will be resurrected; everyone of us.

Now, somepeople may ask, "But what is my personal purpose for being here?" That, my friends, I cannot answer. I have different talents than you do. You know yourself better than I do. And the Lord knows you more than you know yourself. Do not feel like you can't go to the Lord in prayer and ask for guidance in your life. He will direct you. "God doesn't ask us about our capabilities, only our availability. And when we prove to Him our dependability, He will increase our capabilities." Elder Neal A. Maxwell, Quorum of the Twelve Apostles of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints

One last thought/quote:

"And if men come unto me I will show unto them their weakness. I give unto men weakness that they may be humble; and my grace is sufficient for all men that humble themselves before me; for if they humble themselves before me, and have faith in me, then will I make weak things become strong unto them." (Ether 12:27; The Book of Mormon: Another Testament of Jesus Christ)

To a Christian, the purpose of life is to tell God how marvellous he is.

To me, it is to have as good a life as possible, but without hurting anybody or anything.

Good answer, Ceridwen, I also wear a silver ring. It is representative of my intentions.

I mostly agree with Sarte, that we make our own meaning...It's hard to say. I try to act as though my life has a meaning, and that it's to try to make the world a better place, but I don't know if that's...innate, I guess, although that's not exactly the right word.

In the above statement you use the word "but" as if "without hurting anybody or anything" is an exception to your purpose of the goodlife. Are "good" and "not hurting anybody" in conflict? How do you know if your life is good or not?
