Anti-rape condom aims to stop sexual assaults

The cake is a lie
KLEINMOND, South Africa - A South African inventor unveiled a new anti-rape female condom on Wednesday that hooks onto an attacker’s penis and aims to cut one of the highest rates of sexual assault in the world.

“Nothing has ever been done to help a woman so that she does not get raped and I thought it was high time,” Sonette Ehlers, 57, said of the "rapex," a device worn like a tampon that has sparked controversy in a country used to daily reports of violent crime.

Police statistics show more than 50,000 rapes are reported every year, while experts say the real figure could be four times that as they say most rapes of acquaintances or children are never reported.

Ehlers said the “rapex” hooks onto the rapist’s skin, allowing the victim time to escape and helping to identify perpetrators.

“He will obviously be too pre-occupied at this stage,” Ehlers told reporters in Kleinmond, a small village about 60 miles east of Cape Town. “I promise you he is going to be too sore. He will go straight to hospital.”

The device, made of latex and held firm by shafts of sharp barbs, can only be removed from the man through surgery which will alert hospital staff, and ultimately, the police, she said.

It also reduces the chances of a woman falling pregnant or contracting AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases from the attacker by acting in the same way as a female condom.

Owwwww! Not that they wouldn't deserve it, but... ow ow ow!

There is some concern over whether this will incite violence against women that use it, since rapists don't always attack alone. What do you guys think?

EDIT: Oops, forgot the source.

It sounds like the best thing since sliced bread; having said that, in England, it is illegar to concrete glass shards on the top of a fence brick wall - because the poor burglar might get hut; I hope this is permitted - great idea.:)

What stops the raper from simply removing the femdom before raping the woman? I'd have thought that if these things take off, most rapists would start doing that so it would have an initial effect but then become useless :(.

You're right, Fluffy... they could wisen up and learn to check before they 'do the deed.' Rape is a violent act, though... don't people tend to not really think that much during acts of violence?

"Errr excuse me madam.......before I try to assault you, I just wanted to make sure you haven't got one of those nast sharp chastity things........."

I don't think so somehow.;)

Sorry I wasn't specific; I meant phsyically checking. I wonder if it would grab on to fingers as well.. I hope so.

Not during maybe but beforehand surely? It is rare for a rapist to just spontaneously decide to rape someone as they are walking along with zero thought about it before.

Yeah but surely if they are strong enough to force a woman into sexual intercourse, they would be strong enough to check for something like that?

I just think the chastity belt works much better for something like this since it is unlikely that a rapist will have the tools to remove it when they are in that situation.

If he was going to have to physically check, I would have thought the victim could have had time for a very well aimed kick as well............

Makes you wonder about the validity of women going around with a sticker plastered over their forehead, which reads "This person has an anti-rape female condom fitted".

She might have time to get in a kick... and he might have a few buddies to hold her down. You just can't predict these things.

I'd be suprised if it did any good at all. If used frequently enough, rapist might simply opt to sodomize women they come across as a rule instead; Certainly the victim won't get pregnant, but she would now be subject to higher risk of HIV contraction.

It is high time they start using something like this. Rapist should be punished by harming the one thing that they price more than their brains.

Thinking about this at a deeper level - rape is commonly seen to have been comitted by a husband towards a wife - this 'condom' could not really be used in those conditions...........

I think it would work better if it had blades.

And it would be the last time the rapist ever raped!

Sounds like a good idea for starters. Depending on its success, it's going to become well known and soon rapists will be taking a minute to check things out and it's going to become ineffective.

What then? Transparent ones?

I smell something....
In 8 out of 10 rape cases, the victim knew the perpetrator.
(Tjaden and Thoennes 2000)

In the National Women’s Study, intimate partners (current or former spouses or boyfriends) represented 19% of perpetrators, family members represented 27% of perpetrators, and 29% were relatives, friends or acquaintances. Only 22% of perpetrators were strangers. (Kilpatrick, Edmunds, and Seymour 1992)

Victims often experience more than one rape. Of those who were raped in the previous 12 months, women experienced 2.9 rapes and men experienced 1.9 rapes, on average. (Tjaden and Thoennes 2000)

Chances are that this device would only have to work once for it to deter a person from raping again. In my opinion it seems like women tend to get raped by the same person so I feel that this would definately work.

Although I do think I read somewhere that even if you remove the do dads and gadgets of a rapist they have a tendancy to still commit sexual assaults, it is a pleasant thought none the less.:D

As a South African, perhaps i should explain this a bit...

There are quite a lot of 'serial rapists' out there. we're not talking husband and wife, or someone you know. we're talking about the guy sitting next to you in a minibus taxi. Chances are also that the rapist has thought it through a bit - it is a violent act, but he's done it before. I don't see how one can check for this sort of thing, either: unless it was gangrape, which isn't unheard of, i think it would be very difficult (and risky) to poke a finger while the victim is struggling against you with hands and legs. So hopefully it will prevent rape... but, as someone commented about putting glass on top of walls, in South Africa if someone breaks into your home and you have a gun, you shoot to kill - otherwise the burglar may sue you for assault. But i really don't think a rapist will be able to do the same thing - there's a huge difference between burglary and rape.

Lol ... that sure is safe for the user, a razor blade inside their body crevice.

That is very sad to hear; my parents and I nearly seyyled in South Africa when we were kicked out of what is now the DRC. We didn't like what we saw and thought it was a case of 'Out of the frying pan and into the fire', so came back to Europe.

We have some neighbours who came from South Africa; for the first couple of weeks, we would see them stroling about, and ask if they needed help.

The reply was "No thanks, It's just that we are so used to having guard dogs, barbed wire fencing with alarms, and it feels so strange just to be able to go for a walk without being terrified". Are things still that bad ? (They even told us that you need to shoot red lights in the car if you're in a quiet area.
