is this debate stupid?

really, why do we discuss religion in this day and age?

Because there are among us those who would use religion as a weapon. A weapon to compel the rest of us to at least act like we believed also. These folks are serious.

Deadly serious.

Rational minds are at risk as long a single one of these "believers" is loose among us.:(

Religion is the best thing to argue about. We can all think we're right, but when it comes down to brass tacks - there ain't no knowing no god. ;)

In this matter, this day and age isn't much different than it's always been: religion still plays a big part in peoples' motivations. Considering the diversity of ideas, I think it's still an important debate subject.

No not at all. Perhaps you missed the events of 9/11, the conflict in Ireland, the Gaza strip, the 7 day war, the . . . well PERHAPS(?) you see some connection between deeply held religious beliefs and violence.

The again maybe you think all those events were just so many over active disagreements over land.

I'd say it's probably because two-thirds of the world's population affiliates, at least nominally, with a religion of some sort. I do wonder, though, why people who have no belief system at all, are so into maligning the beliefs of those who do. I mean, go to a cooking forum. You'll find people of all kinds who enjoy cooking different things. They'll share ideas, recipes, experiences, etc., and chances are they'll disagree on some points. But it's doubtful that they'll have to put up with very many people who just drop in to say, "Cooking's stupid! Why would anybody want to cook when they can eat out? I've never seen much point in cutting things up and watching them get hot."

I'm just saying that people who think discussing religion is "stupid" might consider not discussing religion in the future.

you mean we have devloped technologies which have helped explain nature/ then yes. but no , human nature/beings are still as stupid as ever

I'm talking about advancements regarding equality, rights, liberty and justice (things that have a history of being scarce in religion's shadow).

Its pretty obvious why when you have a group purporting validity in testimonial evidence without any manner of substantiation vs. a group that understands the practicality which empirical evidence provides, and can demonstrate and explain it.

It wouldn't be so necessary to discuss religion if people were to stop saying things that weren't empirically true which of course fuels the stupidity, but then again, if everyone agreed there wouldn't be any discussion.

No, it's about the search for ourselves. It's about finding the truth. In terms of insecurities and egos, a debate like this can be a great way to confront them.

I'm not quite sure what you mean by "this day and age," Xausted. Technology aside, how's this different from other days and ages? Human Nature hasn't changed.

As far as religion as a subject, it's THE subject. It shapes our world; our politics -- it defines us.

Or, then again, perhaps correlation does not necessarily equal causation.

Sorry, but from what I've seen, saying religious beliefs inherently cause violence is as silly as saying video games cause violence.

No video game pretends to represent or reflect reality, though. ;)
