The Silence of the OT?

Why is the Old Testament silent about there being an afterlife? Is it because an afterlife is an invention of the New Testament authors? Or is there some other reason the Old Testament is silent? What do you think?

Isn't the afterlife after the day of judgement ?
Though I am probably wrong.

But it is amazing how the OT and NT don't mix very well, a case of lost in translation I think.

I don't think that the New Testament is very clear on it either. Almost 100% of my belief on the afterlife comes from scriptures that I believe we revealed in our time - specifically this section of our scriptures: http://scriptures.lds.org/dc/76.

It may be a "line upon line" reason for not being very specific. The Lord gives us information that we can understand and as we begin to understand this he gives us more light and knowledge.

The OT is not silent about an afterlife. Examples:
  • Jonah died and cried from Hell (Jonah 2)
  • The woman at Endor called up Samuel from Hell - (1 Samuel 28)

I believe OT and NT have lots of unanswered questions and it most of its script is lost in translations. All in all those are incomplete books. Because we don't even have its orginal language to refer back if it was translated right or wrong.

Like it has been said, the afterlfie WAS mentioned. Also, though, the afterlife in Heaven was not something the Jews could look forward to YET. Jesus had to open the Gates to Heaven first. So THAT was prophecied.

The only hope the Jews of the OT had in a afterlife was the ressurrection. No one accended into heaven before JC. All who died before Jesus were to sleep in the grave until the resurrection. Read the accounts of those that were resurrected during that time. No one ever came back talking about an glorious afterlife, right? Proof that they were sleeping in death and had no idea what was going on aroung them. We cease to exist when we die. But that does no mean that everything is finished. The faithful man Job knew that he would go to the grave (Sheol) when he died. But by being faithful until death, he would be remembered by God and resurrected. " O that in Sheol you would conceal me, that you would keep me secret until your anger turns back, that you would set a time limit for me and remember me! If and able-bodied man dies can he live again?...You will call, and I myself shall answer you." (Job 14:13-15) This was the belief of all of God's servants in ancient times. Maybe that's why they never spoke of an after life. :)
