“From Him and through Him and for Him all things are.” (Romans 11:36)

READINGS:

l. Is 22:19-23
2. Rom 11:33-36
Gospel Mat 16:13-20

REFLECTION: In our society, you hear it everywhere: Money is power. And it is. Power to buy what you need and beyond that, what you want at the supermarket. Power to get your children to the orthodonist. Power to buy freedom for a relaxing family vacation. Power to keep your home free from leaking roofs and wet cellars. Power to help your child choose the best education.

Christian power is quite a different thing. The readings today give us insights into the basis for Christian power and authority. In the second reading Paul says it directly. “Who has given God anything so as to deserve a return? For from Him and through Him and for Him all things are. To Him be glory forever.”

PRAYER: Lord Jesus, we truly believe that you are the Messiah, the Son of God. Thank you for this gift of faith. Help us to deepen our friendship with you so that like Peter, we may acknowledge you as the center of our lives. Amen

FAMILY DISCUSSION:

Monday: At the table ask each person to tell how they understand the authority, power and responsibility they have in the family.

Tuesday: What are some of the ways in which you as an apostle and disciple, can continue the mission of Jesus today?

Wednesday: Pray today for the authority and responsibility of the leaders in the Church

Thursday: As a parent reflect on your authority toward your children. Show them today your respect for them as persons.

Friday: Do a deed today to assist others who are powerless because they have little money.

Saturday: Pray the second and third sorrowful mysteries of the Rosary (the Scourging at the Pillar and the Crowning with Thorns). Meditate on power given to us by God and the abuse of power.

PRAYER: Lord Jesus, we thank you for the gift of faith and the call to be apostles in our world today. Help us to overcome our feelings of unworthiness and inadequacy. Help us to be open to your call and to your grace, and to work zealously in building up your kingdom. Amen
