Overweight children removed from homes - could this happen under new healthcare reform bills?

Depends Upon My Mood..
I think its really sad..That its even come to this..

Its a no brainer that if you dont feed your children enough and they have ill health affects from it its neglect..(and you should recieve help to feed them)

But when it comes to children being severely obese and developing diseases such as type 2 diabetes ...and long term health affects from overeating or eating horrible diets I dont know what to say..

Its an epidemic but I dont know what the answer is..

Here is my problem..Its children..That cant make a choice for themsleves..and we are talking about their basic body health..And long term affects of diet..including quality of life..

Since people are too stupid and lazy (Im sorry) not poor..to figure out how an apple and a peanut butter sandwich on wheat bread with a glass of water is cheaper(and better for the child) than a happy meal with a coke then I guese intervention is needed..

Since people (apparently) are too stupid and lazy to figure out that a pot full of beans (yes beans) has as much or more protein than a Big Mac and 5 times the fiber and much less the fat and sugar(besides seasonings) and its cheaper.. then I dont know what to tell you..

There is NO excuse for there to be an EPIDEMIC of morbidly obese children..

I just want to say that most of the time it isn't cheaper to feed your kids healthy. And about fast food, some people just don't have the time to cook.[/quote]

That's fine, but we're not talking about overweight kids. We're talking about kids that are severely obese. You can eat fast food several times a week, and not get that bad, especially if you eat halfway decent fast food. Also, the health and nutrition of your children should be a top priority.

I disagree...If you don't have time to peel a banana...instead of sit in a drive though to order french fries fine.

NO one can tell me its "cheaper and quicker" and that they are so pressed for time that they can not figure out how to buy in season vegatables and fruit and get meat on sale..

And if it is that bad?(money and time) that 9 year olds are 40 lbs overwieght?Come on!You need to stay up later..And figure out how cheap and nutrious a cucumber is..and carrots ..and greens ..and beans..and rice..onions..a potato !A head of cabbage is CHEAP>.And its good for you..Eggs are cheap and full of protein...YOu can boil them ..you can fry them ..whatever you like..

I dont buy the whole"we cant afford it and have no time deal"..Not in an epidemic of childhood obesity with old age diseases that hit them..I dont buy it..

I go to the grocery store ..And I know how long it takes to boil some cabbage..Or slice up a cucumber and carrots ...I know how long it takes to peel an orange..or open a grapefruit..Its not "long" and its "not " expensive..

Though do not live in US but personally feel it should be fine if the state also takes the responsibility of putting this kids to shape and returning them after they weigh *NORMAL*.

Amen, sister.

Beans and rice are about as cheap as it gets when it comes to food. Serve that something green and a glass of milk and you've got a great meal for kids.

Besides that, don't forget the WIC program - just about anyone who is below the poverty level (and above it in many cases, depending on familly size) qualifies for WIC for their kids. This is FREE FOOD and so much of it that it can actually be hard to eat all of it! And it's all healthy food.

But I know families who receive WIC who don't even use all their coupons, but at the same time are stuffing their kids with Big Macs.

No amount of legislation can cure stupid. And no amount of handouts can either.

That being said, I think the WIC program is one of the better government programs out there.

Another forum member asked me if I had heard of or read anything in the new bills which stated or implied that overweight children could be forcibly removed from their homes.

Take a gander at these points and then state whether or not you believe this is a possibility.

The Healthcare Reform Bill does address childhood obesity and does allow "intervention" when childhood obesity is noted by a school, daycare, or counselor.

Did you mean something like this?

Obese children taken from bug-ridden Georgia home
By Samira J. Simone, CNN
August 20, 2010 5:15 p.m. EDT

Atlanta, Georgia (CNN) -- When police walked into the home, they found a 5-year-old girl weighing nearly 160 pounds, her teeth rotting, her skin covered in spider bites. Her 4-year-old sister was lying on a filthy mattress, wearing only a urine-soaked diaper.

Police were responding to a domestic dispute call at the Marietta, Georgia, house Monday when they encountered the shocking scene. They called in child abuse investigators and ultimately arrested the parents, James and Anne Cardona, charging both with second-degree child cruelty, Cobb County police spokesman Joe Hernandez said.

The children are now in the state custody. Their parents were released on bond, but Anne Cardona was arrested again late Thursday for giving "misleading information" to a magistrate judge at the couple's first court appearance Tuesday, said Col. Milton Beck of the Cobb County sheriff's department.

She remained in jail Friday without bond until further notice from the court, he said. Attempts to reach her husband were unsuccessful Friday, and it wasn't immediately clear whether they had retained legal counsel.

Police had only stopped at the family's home in the Atlanta suburb one other time, more than a year ago, but hadn't observed anything like they saw Monday, Hernandez said.

The house "stunk of urine and mold," according to the arrest warrants for the Cardonas. It is "infested with roaches, flees, cobwebs and gigantic spiders," the documents said.

The bathroom and shower are covered in black mold and dirt, they said.

Neither girl is enrolled in school. Both are severely obese. The older daughter could not walk 10 feet without "becoming out of breath and wheezing," officers said. The younger child weighs 89 pounds and still drinks from a baby bottle. Her feet were blackened with dirt, her skin also covered in insect bites.

That is an extreme example - and those who justify civil rights violations invariably use the most extreme examples to do so.

Of course those children should have been removed from their home - and we already have laws in place that allowed them to be removed.

If this is an oblique accusation it is unjustified - I just saw the article and thought I would point out that this already occurs.

Yes it does already occur, and we have laws that cover those occurrances.

My point is not an accusation directed at YOU. My point is that excessive legislation and infringement on human/civil rights is always accompanied by the litany from our "representatives" that "It's for the public good!"

And invariably they use the most heart wrenching, extreme examples of human depravity to justify their grabs for power - when other laws and statutes already exist to handle just such extreme situations.

Bloody hell, Engyo, what a depressing article. Poor kids.

Remember the litte child being stalked by a Vulture?

Not that is the standard we have to go by as to being a great mom and dad..but that never left my mind and it never will..

I hope the health insurance reform bill allows morbidly obese children to be taken away from their parents.
