Is it possible to not stereotype?

Smoke

Done here.
It's not possible, and would not be desirable, to avoid it completely.

I just don't think we need to indulge in it with quite the reckless abandon that we usually do.

It's very difficult to be aware of, and consciously avoid, making the myriad stereotypes that we all have a tendency to do on a day-to-day basis, due to our natural wiring to seek patterns and make categorizations. I think, like with any other tool our brains use, the important thing is to learn to become aware of it and use it productively and effectively.

Yeah, the real problem with stereotypes is that they are often based on general truths.

This would only be possible if EVERYONE stopped doing it... Can you ever see that happening? Eh... probably not.

Interesting... So it seams two natural traits of human beings are to be judgmental and stereotypical. I learn a lot about myself on here :D

Quite a typical homosexual response, don't you think?
That's just the sort of shallow, prejudicial comment you always get from a girls-on-trampolinist.

It's like my father used to say to me when I was little: "Son . . . if you can't say something nice about a person, or a group of people, then just shut your ugly little trap boy, because you're never going to amount to anything anyway."

He sure had a way with words . . .

A natural trait of human beings is to associate objects together into useful classifiers and to tend to overlook the differences that exist between two objects that have been classified together in furtherance of one's own expediency.

Short answer no. The best you can do is be aware of the ones you have and try not to let them influence your decisions.

American made comments. American tough. Deal with it, or we'll send in the Marines.

As Doppel and others said, stereotyping is very much a natural feature of the way our brains work. It may be possible to avoid it, but it goes very much against the grain of our thought proccesses.

That said, it may be constructive to be aware of same and to make a select few choices of countering the effect for specific purposes.

I think that it is possible if you mean can we keep ourselves from making judgement calls based on previous experiance. It does take work. I use to think that all tattooed peirced teenagers were drug users until I met an awesome Christian couple who ran a tattooing and body peircing shop. Now to avoid another stereo type I do realize there are plenty of tattooted and peirced non-Christian non-durg users in the world. It is not possible for most of us to avoid hearing about stereo types in the media and otherwise but we can avoid stereotyping if we are willing to work at it. Let people's actions tell you who they are do not jump to conclusions!

Why would you not stereotype? Patterns are a useful starting place. The problem is when you don't reevaluate your position in the light of new evidence.

Depends Upon My Mood..
I agree..We will "stereo type" and make generalizations by accidnet not even on purpose ..We woudl probalby have to constantly act not to..

Like if I saw a woman walking down Harry Hines boulevard with a mini skirt on chewing gum at 1 in the morning I might "streotype her" as a prostitute" :sorry1:
