It's very difficult to be aware of, and consciously avoid, making the myriad stereotypes that we all have a tendency to do on a day-to-day basis, due to our natural wiring to seek patterns and make categorizations. I think, like with any other tool our brains use, the important thing is to learn to become aware of it and use it productively and effectively.
Quite a typical homosexual response, don't you think?

As Doppel and others said, stereotyping is very much a natural feature of the way our brains work. It may be possible to avoid it, but it goes very much against the grain of our thought proccesses.
That said, it may be constructive to be aware of same and to make a select few choices of countering the effect for specific purposes.

I think that it is possible if you mean can we keep ourselves from making judgement calls based on previous experiance. It does take work. I use to think that all tattooed peirced teenagers were drug users until I met an awesome Christian couple who ran a tattooing and body peircing shop. Now to avoid another stereo type I do realize there are plenty of tattooted and peirced non-Christian non-durg users in the world. It is not possible for most of us to avoid hearing about stereo types in the media and otherwise but we can avoid stereotyping if we are willing to work at it. Let people's actions tell you who they are do not jump to conclusions!
It's a built-in feature with humans....a useful one too, provided that one is aware of it & can rise above it when appropriate.

I agree..We will "stereo type" and make generalizations by accidnet not even on purpose ..We woudl probalby have to constantly act not to..
Like if I saw a woman walking down Harry Hines boulevard with a mini skirt on chewing gum at 1 in the morning I might "streotype her" as a prostitute" :sorry1:
