Tolerance

turk179

I smell something....
After reading Draka's thread "Shaking my head," I am curious to know all of your opinions on whether you feel that tolerance for ones religion is growing or declining?

I find that tolerance for all religion, in general, is increasing. Except for Christianity. That seems to be on the decline.

Tolerance for Christianity is on a HUGE decline, while tolerance for other religions is growing by leaps and bounds.

It is true. For some reason people really hate Christians, which just comes as SUCH A SHOCK!

Hmm, can't think of why that would be.... (*cough* Matthew 10:22 *cough*)
Nah! It's the sanctimonious, better then thou attitude of some Christians that give the whole body a black eye.

May I ask why you feel this way?
Well I'll make my view slightly more specific. I think that overall tolerance for religion is in decline. Some religions, like Wicca for example, are becoming more tolerated but this is not large enough to make a significant impression on the overall picture of things.

I think that the answer is both; I also think it will vary significantly depending where in the world we are speaking of.

By both, I mean that 20 years ago, when I told people I am Buddhist they would think I was crazy, but not give me grief over the decision. Nowadays, Buddhist practice doesn't strike people as crazy anymore; however, people from other faiths are much more likely to challenge those who believe differently than they do.

Qualification: This is true here in Houston, TX, USA which is a pretty cosmopoltan city. In some of the little towns in East Texas, I would probably get a very different initial reaction from folks, and likely the remonstrations would be stronger, and probably more physical.

I can't really speak for how this would play out elsewhere in the world, other than I know that it is illegal to practice Buddhism in many Islamic countries. I am not sure what the penalties range, but I am sure it isn't pleasant.

If it ain't that it's some other excuse. Christian hate is quite in fashion.

I'd say tolerance for religion is going down as philosophy and science are taught to more and more people in college. While it's certainly possible to be religious and read atheist/agnostic philosophers and believe in scientific discoveries, it seems that in many places they are taught to supercede religion.
Just my humble opinion, but I believe that tolerance for Christianity is going down because Christian values are too often being used to legislate a population that is nowhere near 100% Christian, and we do get quite bitter at being told we can't do something because of someone else's religious views.

This is all new to me; I obviously lead a very sheltered life; I honestly am unaware of any intollerance towards any faith - but, perhaps that is because we are so greatly multi-cultured, where I live.:)

I agree the tolerance for Christianity is going down because of the holier than thou attitude and intolerance many of them display.
I think the withcraft-practising religions are very slowly gaining more acceptance. Acceptance for Islam has droped. Acceptance for other religions such as Hindu and Buddah im not sure about.

Now that saddens me; the only way to go forward is to show Islamic people that we realize that the terrorism is not representative of their faith. I see quite a few Muslims around, and I always makee a point of smiling and saying 'hello' as I would do for anyone else. I pray you are wrong, because, if you are right, that means real trouble and I mean REAL....:(

I'm not sure what can be meant by saying that people are becoming less tolerant of Christianity. In America, at least 85% of the people identify themselves as Christian. So, is it only the 15% of people who do not identify themselves as Christian who are increasing in their intolerance of Christianity? Or perhaps are Christians themselves becoming less tolerant of some variants of their religion?

I dont feel there is any real antipathy towards Christians in the UK, it is just total disinterest.
Mostly people don't give a monkeys what others believe unless it is shoved up their noses.

There will always be incidents of religious and civil strife when disparate groups intermingle, and from time to time general mayhem will erupt, but, on the whole I think the general trend is toward more tolerance for diversity.

In the past laws restricting various religious groups were commonplace. Today laws forbidding religious intolerance are commonplace. Today Jews may join the country club, Catholics are permitted in Massachusetts and Protestants in Spain, and pogroms anywhere grab headlines.

Yes. I don't think it is really an intolerance of Christianity, as a religion. It is more of an intolerance of Christians themselves. At least, that is what I have noticed. I think this is dangerous. It's the religion people should dislike, not the people. Most Christians never have a choice. They are born into it. The same is true with most Muslims and Jews. You can't be intolerant of people. Just religions.

This is why paganism is so beautiful. Almost every pagan I've ever met in my entire life, chose to be pagan. They weren't raised to be pagan. They weren't forced to read pagan books or attend pagan rituals. They weren't threatened with hell if they didn't become pagan. No. In fact, they become pagan because it felt right. Because THEY thought it was right, not because someone else told them that it was. It's so beautiful, really. When you think about it. :) Makes me smile every time I think about it.

Everyone has a choice. An intolerance towards Christians is an intolerance towards the religion. People think it's cool but it's not. It's just as bigoted as intolerance towards any other religion or race.
