How do you feel about whaling?

You know.. killing whales. Should it be internationally illegal? Is it okay with modesty? With such scarcity, is it even viable? Allow whale hunting?

I think it's wrong but that's just my personal opinion.

If someone was hungry I see no reason why they shouldn't hunt though I think if it were me, I'd go for creatures that were easier to catch and more plentiful. I've always been fascinated by them but I think their ability to reproduce is a bit fragile compared other creatures that live in the sea. Again I could be wrong. I've heard cases of whale populations almost go to extinction.

I understand that most people hunt whales just like they do deer for a sport and that I find appalling.

Right now we can't afford to hunt whales. Hell, the international community really needs to crack down on Japan for overfishing them for "research".

Maybe in some theoretical future where populations have been given time to recover, but certainly not now.

If the particular species of whale being hunted is endangered than it should be illegal. Otherwise I don't see how it's any different than any other animal being slaughtered for meat.

All whale products have synthetic replacements.

There is no need to kill them.

The Japanese killed whales in our waters and yet all we do is take them to court instead of blowing their ship out of the water.

Japs is shortened japanese. Is the shortening of that word offenseive in America or something?

We shorten everything, ambulance is ambo, service station is servo Mcdonalds is maccas etc.

I wasn't meaning to be offensive there.

Well back in the 40s it was certainly accepted. "Slap a Jap" and all that appearing all over American propaganda, but we try to learn from things like that, especially after putting Japanese folks into internment camps...

I don't get what they are even used for anymore? Are there some Japanese oligarchs who can't get enough or something?

My grandfather says that and makes jokes about the Japanese. We have to shush him up when we're in public.

He fought over in Germany while his brother fought in Japan during that period. So I guess times were different back then.

Well from what I've heard, it's nostalgia mostly. Whale meat is crap. However, back during WWII many poorer Japanese civilians were pretty much forced to eat it because they couldn't get any better meat. Nowadays it's people who for some strange reason had the taste grow on them.

edit: Of course there might be some other reason out there. This is just what I've heard from exchange students on campus.

Haha.. man.. is there not an ecological disaster that doesn't always come straight back to classism?

Uh dude, we're talking about a term associated with the systematic imprisonment and theft of an entire ethnic group here. I mean, I'm not saying we should ban it's use or anything, but around here it is not the kind of word you use in polite company.

I mean we don't go around calling people *******, Chinks, or Kikes do we? It's just rude.

Actually, the word "Jap" is an epithet for a wartime enemy. The fact that the gov't robbed & imprisoned some citizens of such ancestry is awful,
but not the origin of the word. It's similar to "Krauts", "Gerries" & "Huns", who were also interred in the US. I thought you were just making the
case on another thread that it's OK to use such language when people really really offend you.
