My granduncle always carried a pistol in his pocket, and I've recently learned that my brother carries a very small one in his. I'd be afraid I'd reach for some change and shoot myself in the foot. :)
I meant concealed carry permits. ;)

why would the USA push it if it were not mostly in their own interest.
The others will lose any Independence they still might have, and be dominated by American corporations.

That's just it Terry. There is no compelling reason for Canada to develop formal ties with the US. Personally I can't see more than a small handful of Canadians thinking this is a good idea. Most would just laugh and then go back their beer and back bacon sandwich.

Good grief, guys. Does anyone see what is going on with the EU right now? And how the Euro has completely devastated Greece and Portugal? Doesn't anyone understand how Mexico would be completely thrown into chaos and civil war if they were forced to tie their currency to the US and Canada through something like an Amero?

No....the NAU would be a terrible idea. For everybody. That is, unless the movie Mad Max seems like your idea of a nice future. :D

Terry unless America goes to Socialism ;) I know some think that sounds crazy now, but it'll happen one day. Obama isn't Socialist enough for me, but he's already helped move America well in that direction.

The only problem with Socialism is that eventually you run out of other people's money. :D

Well what I mean is, didn't the EU do good for the countries involved?

There would be a huge difference between the two though. The EU is made up of a lot of small, old countries, many of whom have had over a thousand years to develop deep-seated and complex animosities with their neighbours, and some of these had very recently been left adrift by the collapse of the USSR. Any NAU would be made up of a few big and relatively young countries. It would also be almost completely dominated by the US, whereas in the EU there isn't any one single overriding national interest.

Also, for those mentioning the problems in Greece, there is a big difference between the EU and the Eurozone. Many countries are in the EU but not in the Euro. (There are even a couple that use the Euro but are not in the EU) The Greek crisis was primarily due to flaws in the implementation of the Euro and not in the union itself; there's no particular reason why any future NAU would have to make the same mistakes, or for that matter adopt a single currency to start with.

However, I agree with people saying that it just isn't going to happen. Just look at how many people in the US still chafe at being part of the UN.

(You know, there's nothing like a good few acronyms to get the day off to a good start)

Oh you're absolutely right, and that is why we must let millions of children starve, offer poor education, poor health care, low paying jobs, and a poor future... Brilliant.

Your statement is an extreme oversimplification and pathetic rationalization.

Sorry, I suppose I was a bit extreme. I'm just personally sick and tired of all the stigmatization and opposition to socialism.
Well. I have lived under a few socialist administrations in British Columbia and the experience has left a sour taste in my mouth. Heck, if you want an indictment against socialism simply look at the state of Europe these days. No, not pure socialism, but certainly socialist influenced. Their economies are now quite ill with no real cure in sight.
