What if you are wrong ?

That Question was asked in a debate over religion , and I wonder how many have ever actually given it much thought ? I have .

So , I'm asking " What if you find yourself standing in front of an afterlife that you never believed in ? What then ? What would you do ?"

Personally , I have thought about if , and I feel that it all would depend upon how wrong I had been . :) I know that I would have a lot of questions , and would expect some very good answers . And assuming that I was allowed into this afterlife , it would depend upon the answers I got if I would actually accept it or not .... actually accepting it would most likely be the difference in being allowed in or not ? But I don't mean to turn this into a debate . But as an excample of what I mean , I do not think that I could ever accept etrenal damnation , as in the concept of a firely Hell , and if I found out that there was one , I believe that I would accept eternal Death over Life knowing that there was such a place ... of course that is assuming that I have the choice . ;)

If I die and the Christian God is waiting for me, I will have no other choice but to accept responsibility for my actions and accept eternal damnation. There is no sense not taking responsibilty for ones' actions.

Then I'd have to deal with it I guess. I don't have a clear cut image of an "afterlife" anyway, I, of course, have ideals, but that is just imagination...for who can truly begin to envision what it would really be like? If there is anything at all. Just deal with it...for that is all I could do anyway.

I guess I'll go to hell. ... or be reincarnated, or merge with God, or just vanish into nothingness, or become a ghost, or...

I agree , Jocose . But I meant this as more of a " what if " thread . Assuming that you have made it that far , lets also assume that you are allowed into " Heaven " { or where-ever }. Could you , would you make that chances required ? Would you adapt ? ;)

If I was to be proved wrong about my beliefs, I would be able to say, well, I lived as good a life as I could, I tried to be a good, caring person.:)

Nor do I Draka . :) I usually say that I will discover what happens , when it happens . But give a little thought to it . Of course we willn't know for sure until it happens , if it happens .

Why give more thought to it? You just summed it up anyway...we won't know for sure until it happens...if it happens. So why fret or worry or anything like that over something which we cannot possibly fully understand anyway? We'd drive ourselves crazy...and I'm crazy enough already thank you:D :biglaugh: .

:biglaugh: Ok . I wrote that before reading the other posts Draka , and I guess that it was a rather silly question . Not much one could do , really . But I find it an interesting " what-if ". :)

You mean if God was like, "Look here now! I'm am God and you are an idiot. You totally lived your life against my will. But, I'm a rather forgiving chap. I forgive your sins. Would you like a place in Heaven?" I suppose I would inquire into the temperature and general location of Hell and if it didn't sound like a good eternal vacation spot, I'd thank God for his forgiveness and adapt. There is a certain point in which you must let go of your pride and admit that you were wrong. Coming face to face with God would be indisputable evidence of his existence and, if this be the hypothetical case, He was ultimate power in the universe, I would be more than happy to ditch my Satanic ways and join the righteous in their harp playing and questionable white-robe wearing fashion. :)

Yes , that is just what I mean . :) So , you would learn to play a harp , even if you hated the sound of harps ?

If I see you there Scott , I will have to remember to stand up-wind of you then . :biglaugh: But yea , that would pretty much describe it eh ?

But actually , a Christian wouldn't end up in Hell , they would end up in an afterlife of another religion altogether .

Well first of all, I dont claim my religion to be the "right way". I am fully aware that I am probably way off... however this is the closest I can get to understanding the Divine and the Spiritual Realm. If I am wrong (which I probably am for several things), then I would not apologize AT ALL. I lived my life to the best of my ability and have believed only in what made sense to me, no "God" has ever told me personally that what I am doing is wrong... so why should I be sorry?
I'd obviously accept whatever was coming to me (like I would have a choice...) but, like I said... I would not be apologetic in the least bit. ;)

Hehe.... but to be clear... my "vision" of the afterlife is to be face to face with God... I can't imagine a "supernatural" afterlife that would be "wrong"... but I have a limited imagination.:D

If I am wrong, and I end up standing before an angry, vengeful God for final judgment, and he actually wanted to send me to hell for being mistaken, so be it. I don't think I'd want to spend an eternity with a God that fickle, anyway.

I'd guess that after 5 minutes of the "fiery lake" (if that's hell and I'm not sure I believe it), you'd probably beg to spend eternity with anybody that would get you out of the torment. :p
