How Does One Find Their Spirit Guide?

painted wolf

Grey Muzzle
Well, if that's the case, is there any way to spiritually prepare yourself or strengthen yourself in order to be deemed worthy enough for a spirit guide to seek you out?
Nope.
I don't know what they look for in people... just that they are the ones who make the choice.
So don't worry about it. You will either get one or you won't... nothing you can do will change that.

And don't mistake any spirit for a spirit guide... Don't expect them to anything you want, don't expect them to even hang around, they can and will leave you when they decide it's time to.

Allow your subconcious mind to conjure up whatever your idea of a spirit guide is based on various input you've had on the subject throughout your life. It will most likely be some type of animal native to North America.

You have no idea how many people I've talked to say their "spirit guide" is a unicorn or a dragon or a leopard or a lion.... Apparently it's a global world now and reality is not the only source of inspiration.

I suppose it's just me wanting to get more in touch with the spirit world in general. I don't really know how to go about doing that.

That much, I know. One doesn't command spirits, they ask. If the spirits choose to give, they will. If they choose not to, they just won't.

*nods* Frankly, it is a bit embarrassing. The amusing thing is that since it is non-physical it can assume any shape it wants, including no shape at all.

Perhaps... most that I know of are archetypic... Grandfather Deer isn't going to look like my little pony.

My spirit guide takes no definable shape, mostly just a sense that it is near. Although I am close with a number of spirit familiars, especially grandmother spider. I think putting a definite image on them limits your own ability to perceive what they may be trying to convey...

Is the Wholly Spirit limited for some reason to apparition in the form of a dove?

I'm fairly certain that holy spirit has also been the form of rushing wind, and tongues of fire.lol. I wouldn't be surprised if holy spirit came in many other forms as well! Like a silly *** on religious forums. Not that I'm calling myself God, well not any more so than any good occult boy would. Love you UV!!!

I have a hard time seeing Grandmother Spider as a familiar to anyone... Unless we are talking about very different Grandmother Spiders.

Just for the interest of the discussion ... my perspective and understanding of scripture was that the Spirit descended like a dove ... not in the form of a dove. However, generations of artists painting the scene knew of no other way to illustrate the event except to insert the image of a dove. its a little bit like saying something is as light as a feather ...

Hi There,

hmm, spirit guides.
They exist in certain cultures, but the concepts are different from what we tend to think they are, because of the New Age movement.

I don't want to claim any particular authority on this, but a friend of mine who has lived on a US rez for a while in the 70s would agree with painted wolf - it's the powers that come to you, not the other way around. She further says that even though one uses animal metaphors to describe the powers the experience of them can be quite "abstract". Maybe somebody with a Christian background would describe the same experience as inspriration through the Holy spirit. Moreover, the point of the religious practice is not to "have" spirits, rather to become a better human being, with ethical codes similar to Christianity.

WE should also not forget that Native American cultures are diverse and have different concepts, and again are different from other cultures where "spirit guides" exist, be it shamanic cultures form Asia or religions with the concept of "possession" (e.g. African vodun or Haitian vodoo).

This is how I've come to look at it... Animals represent archetypes that can vary from one nation to another and even to a degree by situation.

" You don't " eh PW ? :) I understand what you mean , and love your bluntness . :) However there are different " types " of " guides "... As you may recall , I have a connection with Raven . It is a connection that I wooed ... It is the only case { for me } and it took some time , which to me makes it special in it's own way . Raven has been an important teacher .

I am not sure if you would call that a " guide " or not ? And I think that is where much of the misunderstanding comes from . Defining what is what in a very shadowly world .

As for my " main guide ", Totem , or whatever one wishes to call him , I have always known who he was . And when I decided to find out for sure , I found him looking through my dining room window at me ... :) I was perparing for a Vision Quest at the time , deciding upon what I would need , and he was looking at me as if to ask " What are you doing ?" . :) That is as close as I ever came to doing a First Nation ritual ... and his reply was good enough for me .

Oh certainly someone can court a particular spirit... but it's not quite the same as finding ones guide IMHO. Your connection with Raven wooed or not is something to be cherished... and it may be that Raven, with a fondness for shiny things simply wanted you to prove your shiny-ness. :D

ps. always a joy to have your input! :)

If you are referring to animal spirit guides...you don't find them. They choose you. They come to you on their own terms. You probably have one already and don't even realize it. You don't get to pick and choose what animal you get either...it just doesn't work that way.

For anyone with a Bible perspective, Jesus spoke of the Comforter/Holy Spirit and Paul spoke of the Holy Spirit being our teacher ... why would we have the need to look for some other "entity" fto guide us???
I've had some experience with this, and I can tell you that a spirit guide is wholly different from the Holy Spirit. Some sort of intermediary, that might lead you to get in touch with the Holy Spirit. You don't look for it. It finds you.

Kill your current idea of a "spirit guide". In waking, view every living thing and every breath of every breeze as a potential spirit guide. In dreaming, view every entity as a potential spirit guide. Then be open to anything that comes.

Edited to add: Unless it's some guy offering to help you find a spirit guide... for a fee.

That is some darned good advise Alceste. And I know good advise when I hear it. pretty soon patterns of maybe the same animal may be turning up in your life from time to time.

A few of them you should already suspect. I already suspected a nature priestess type woman and a wolf, but I had no clue about the others. I went to an incredible psychic about 4 months ago and she told me about the first two and a dragon and a turtle. What this means, I couldn't tell ya. She described something of each of their roles, but I don't know where to take it next.

That being said, there is a book called, "Opening to Channel: How to Connect with Your Guide." I have it and it is very specific about what you should do to contact your spirit guides. I unfortunately haven't had the discipline to follow through with the meditation.
