Good question, dust1n. The term's lost its original meaning in recent years and become a synonym for "really good friend."
"Soul mate" refers to entities that have been increasingly closely, more intimately connected over repeated incarnations; entities destined eventually to merge. it's an eastern concept. How the western countries with Abrahamic traditions got hold of it I don't know.
If soulmate is as Hannah said, "someone out there that was designed just for me," then I do believe in that, as long as it is recognized that we each are the designers of our own soulmate. (Even if it's "God".)
