How important is hope?

Hope ? - that is an essential ingredient to a happy life (IMO)

And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. 1 Corinthians 13:13

Hope is one of the three interwoven fibers of the lifeline in the Spirit that is critical to overcoming all hardships and setbacks whether they are the result of assault or misfortune. The love of God and our love back to Him along with faith in His goodness are the framework of a life with hope. If we lose hope, the Bible tells us that our heart can grow sick. (Proverbs 13:12)

There are three categories of hope. There are eternal hopes, passing wishes, and hope for events and changes to occur prior to the LORD's return that are linked to His eternal purposes. If all our hopes are anchored in the LORD, His righteousness and His eternal Kingdom; passing earthly hope can be distinguished more easily from hope founded on eternal love and faith. An example of an eternal hope is the expectation and desire for a resurrected body that is no longer subject to sickness, pain, decay or death.

The second type of hope is temporal. This includes passing wishes for things that are bound by the limitations of our earthly existence. Our hopes to start a business or to take a pleasure vacation are examples of this second form of hope. Unless anchored in some eternal purpose from the LORD, these wishes are simply passing hopes. However, the hope for a vacation with one's family that sets the framework for increasing the well being of family love and trust towards one another is certainly a hope found in the third category--it has an eternal dimension.

This third type of hope includes earth-time pre-resurrection events that are linked to Christ's eternal purposes. Hoping that a loved one will enter the Kingdom of righteousness through heart felt repentance and faith in our LORD's eternal life giving blood is an example of this third hope.

I have had times when I have wanted to fall asleep and never wake up again, but that little shred of hope is what keeps me going. I get most upset by worrying excessively about the future and being negative about it, but I generally still have a teeny bit of me that thinks it will all work out :)

I believe that hope is very important, but only really useful when coupled with faith.

Human beings are not meant to be empty . Without Hope , we tend to fill with Despair . You decide which is better . ;)

BTW I like your reply Michel . I like all of the replies , but Michel's reply was kinda what I thought when I read the topic . :) Without Faith { in something } , we wander aimlessly . Without Love , we become indifferent ...

Hope is so important and essential in our lives. We cannot live without hope. Hope gives us courage, enthusiasm, optimism.... Since there is God to Whom we resort and who answers our prayers, there must always be HOPE in our lives!

It is difficult to walk with "hope" because there is always the chance that "disappointment" will want to tag along.

Hope for the best....but prepare for the worst.
I think it's good to hold onto a little bit of hope even in the bleakest of situations. Weighing yourself down with depression and negative thoughts will help less then having hope instead.

Michel,

Please allow me to piggyback on your already excellent post...

Hope is also a defense against temptation and doubt:

1 Thessalonians 5:8
But since we belong to the day, let us be self-controlled, putting on faith and love as a breastplate, and the hope of salvation as a helmet.
Hebrews 6:19
We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure. It enters the inner sanctuary behind the curtain,

And faith is the completion of hope...

Hebrews 11:1
[ By Faith ] Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see.

Hope is purifying...

1 John 3:3
Everyone who has this hope in him purifies himself, just as he is pure.

Hope is not only an expression of your faith, hope is good for you, hope is theraputic to the soul!

Hope should always be there. But don't be disappointed if the hoped for event doesn't happen.
It may work out even better in the long run. Thats ware Faith comes in. If you remember to love little else matters that much.

Hope springs eternal in the human breast;
Man never Is, but always To be blest:
The soul, uneasy and confin'd from home,
Rests and expatiates in a life to come.

An Essay on Man, Epistle I, 1733 :)

I believe hope is essential and that we cannot be saved without it. Here are some scriptures I love that are related to hope:

Moroni 7

38 For no man can be saved, according to the words of Christ, save they shall have faith in his name; wherefore, if these things have ceased, then has faith ceased also; and awful is the state of man, for they are as though there had been no redemption made.

39 But behold, my beloved brethren, I judge better things of you, for I judge that ye have faith in Christ because of your meekness; for if ye have not faith in him then ye are not fit to be numbered among the people of his church.

40 And again, my beloved brethren, I would speak unto you concerning hope. How is it that ye can attain unto faith, save ye shall have hope?

41 And what is it that ye shall hope for? Behold I say unto you that ye shall have hope through the atonement of Christ and the power of his resurrection, to be raised unto life eternal, and this because of your faith in him according to the promise.

42 Wherefore, if a man have faith he must needs have hope; for without faith there cannot be any hope.

43 And again, behold I say unto you that he cannot have faith and hope, save he shall be meek, and lowly of heart.

44 If so, his faith and hope is vain, for none is acceptable before God, save the meek and lowly in heart; and if a man be meek and lowly in heart, and confess by the power of the Holy Ghost that Jesus is the Christ, he must needs have charity; for if he have not charity he is nothing; wherefore he must needs have charity.

45 And charity suffereth long, and is kind, and envieth not, and is not puffed up, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil, and rejoiceth not in iniquity but rejoiceth in the truth, beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things.

46 Wherefore, my beloved brethren, if ye have not charity, ye are nothing, for charity never faileth. Wherefore, cleave unto charity, which is the greatest of all, for all things must fail—

47 But charity is the pure love of Christ, and it endureth foreven; and whoso is found possessed of it at the last day, it shall be well with him.

48 Wherefore, my beloved brethren, pray unto the Father with all the energy of heart, that ye may be filled with this love, which he hath bestowed upon all who are true followers of his Son, Jesus Christ; that ye may become the sons of God; that when he shall appear we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is; that we may have this hope; that we may be purified even as he is pure. Amen.
