Prime Minister Historic Debate

If Cameron gets in, how far do you think he'll get with his ideas on a British constitution instead of the European constitution? It'll be basically the same thing with little if any changes, it seems more like two fingers up to Europe than anything else.

Not that I am in support of us putting all our eggs in the Euro basket, but alienating ourselves won't do us much favours either.

One question that does worry me though, would Britain having a constitution later lead us down the road of having a Bill of Rights?

If you want to see the Conservative stance on Euro check the debates between Maggie Thatcher and the Labour front bench. The argument is not new.

Conservative economic policy is very much in favour of keeping the pound and independence from Europe.

there is an important reason for this: In UK we are largely a property owning democracy (as encouraged by Conservative ideology) unlike most european countries. Therefore all UK homeowners are extremely affected by the interest rates placed on us.
It reliquish control of the exchange rate to Brussels would be utterly disastrous for this country. The Euro argument has, as i said been going on for decades... it literally is down to a difference of opinion in economic policy - its two models.

When I studied Economics, although we were taught the pros of the Euro model, the general vibe was that the UK urgently needed to keep control of its monetary policy.

Conservatives are anti the Euro and they always have been. Cameron will keep us independent from Europe for now and I personally believe that is the right thing to do.
We do not need to be subsidising other countries until we have sorted ourselves out at least.

He's not going to alienate us, UKIP might try to alienate us, but the Conservatives are more concerned about Bristish business so will need to keep trade relations open.

re: The constitution:
If Cameron actually follows through with this promise (Tony offered something similar in 1997 and it never happened) then HARRH!!

Our constitution is fcuked. Its not changed since the Civil war and the establishment of the first Parliament. It urgently needs to be re-written because it is full of holes. The Constitution was written before the Industrial Revolution. It doesn't account for the concept of Corporations and Big Business.
The balance of power has changed dramatically.

If Cameron is promising this then we need to make sure he goes through with his promise.
The reason its not happening is because its going to be mammouth. The country will have to be brough to referendum on many topics.

Ultimately, although they are given an extremely bad press and there are undoubtedly some 'bad eggs' I think politicians do desire to bring about positive change for their country. If you watch Tony Blairs leaving speech he highlights the essence of the House. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=usNZB_yb6SQ&feature=related
I think if something as important as a new constitution for this country is written, our leaders will rise to the task and write one that they truely believe will benefit the country most.

I just hope that if and when the constitution is brought to referendum, every single man and woman in the UK pulls their finger out to vote!
