So who likes to run?

Who here likes to go running? How often do you go, for how long and over what distances? What kinds of trails? How has running improved your life?

On campus, there is a 5k route that I run which goes up and down two very large hills (it's the going down part that I enjoy). :) It normally takes me a little under 20 minutes. Then I walk for a minute, and then jog a 10 minute cooldown--30 minutes altogether. I normally run six days a week, but lately I've been running only four or five days a week because my summer courses have been rigorous.

Running is such a wonderful thing, for both your mind and body. I think running is just great. Who's with me?! :jam:

I like to run! Normally I run about 20 minutes in total. I don't really do cooldowns. I try to run at least 10 or 15 minutes everyday, and even on the treadmill if I have to. Sometimes its hard to find the time, but the thought that motivates me is knowing that even two minutes of running is better than none!

We have so much in common! Maybe we could get together sometime? :)

On a serious note, we should go jogging down at Indian Riffle park sometime when I get out of summer school.

That's a great point....the problem I have is that I know that once I get out there, I'll end up running for the usual 30 minutes anyway. I hate treadmills though. Do you watch TV while you're on the treadmill?

Do you, like, watch shows about people running?

I don't run much anymore. I am joining a moutainbike marathon next month for a 'good' cause. We begin training in a few weeks or so.

A whole marathon?! Whoah! That's awesome. Where will it be taking place, and for what charitable cause?

You'll have to let us know how it goes.

People who like to walk, or do other cardiovascular exercises like biking are welcome to share in this thread as well, by the way.

I guess I'm not running hard enough in my regular workouts or something, but more running just keeps my heartrate up. I walk until I'm cool though...I guess thats a sort of cooldown.

I hate them too, but if its late at night, (very common for me), or wintertime its my only choice. I usually listen to music and stare at the wall, hehe.

Right before I found out I needed surgery for my scoliosis I was getting into running--amusingly enough, to help with my back pain. Now I can't run until late January because it can mess up my vertebrae. :banghead3 If I walk for a really really long time, does it count as running? ;)

Actually yes, Jensa! If you walk one mile you will burn the SAME amount of calories as you would if you ran that mile. The only difference is that running works your heart and muscles harder, and burns calories faster, (because over the one mile, you burn the same calories, but in less time). Power-walking can also begin to give you the cardio benefits as well. Like the crazy housewives with a soup can in each hand that I see zipping around my neighborhood!

I used to run a lot. Long-distance was my favourite. These days a 15 minute jog is more likely and not as frequent as it should be.

I hate running. Swimming is where it's at. The only time I like to run is playing parkour with my friends.

You bring up a good point, Zephyr. I've read that swimming is considered to be even better exercise than running. Its an aerobic activity that works the muscles in your legs, arms, and torso, but you aren't pounding on your joints like you do in running.

I've never tried swimming laps, but once I move to college and have access to a pool, I think I want to start!

I prefer long walks to running, although I've found that it's more practical to run when being chased by the law than it is to walk.

It is strange but the Running thing did not take off for the general public till well into the 80's
In my youth40's and 50's most sporting activity was in team games.I was thought odd at school because I ran every day, mostly lugging a couple of rocks with me in each hand. ( I had heard boxers did this and I also liked to box) We had three main runs a block ,about 1 1/4 miles usually did two or three. a Bridle. about five miles, and a plant about 7 miles.
Though we were not allowed to race cross country more than 3 miles at under 15 . going up to 13 miles at 17years.
Kept it up till I joined the army, there the whole regiment ran a cross country once a week of about 10 miles. Though I was one of the fittest I never won but had an average of fourth so often came second.

I love to run. I used to run 5x a week, but now I have tendinitis in my knees :( Don't they (my knees) realize I'm only 22? So now I only run once or twice a week for about 2-3 miles and fill in the other days with cycling, elliptical machines, rowing, etc. I'd much rather be running long distance, though.

The more muscles you move, the more effective the aerobic activity is, so swimming is great. Also I like it because I have very weak joints.

I used to run between 10-20 miles a day. When I started I had perfect arches and now I have completely flat feet. I can't run for excersize. I also wore the exact type of shoes for my feet, its just some people were not designed to do long distance running. But I can get up and down a basketball court or a tennis court as fast as anyone.

I love running---oh, for the days when I was in super shape! Back in the day I did 2 half-marathons. I have no one to train with now, and work and other things, unfortunately, have taken away from my running.:(

I do run when I can, though, and I also swim. A half-mile of swimming takes more out of me than 3 miles of running! Swimming is indeed one of the best workouts there is. I also enjoy rock-climbing. Really good climbers are in excellent shape.
