Is thinking about sinning a sin?

The following hadith, which I already posted it in the Islamic section, answers your question:



Ibn Abbas (The Prophet's cousin), may Allah be pleased with him, reported that the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, related from his Lord (glorified and exalted be He):
"Verily Allah has recorded the good deeds and the evil deeds." Then he clarified that: "Whosoever intends to do a good deed but does not do it, Allah records it with Himself as a complete good deed; but if he intends it and does it, Allah records it with Himself as ten good deeds, up to seven hundred times, or more than that. But if he intends to do an evil deed and does not do it, Allah records it with Himself as a complete good deed; but if he intends it and does it, Allah records it down as one single evil deed." [Al-Bukhari & Muslim]



We can see very clearly the mercy of God upon us and thank Him for that day and night. The bad thoughts and the intention to do an evil act won't be counted unless you do it. If you have that intention to do an evil act and you refrain from doing it God will count it as a good deed. How Merciful God is towards His servants!!!

Thanks for posting this. I think A LOT, and not all of my thoughts are good, but I don't act on stuff. This helps.

God knows our hearts, if we think about sinning but dont only because the oportunity dosnt come up or because we dont want to face the consequences of that sin, then really it shows that our desires are unclean and sinful.

For example if i had a friend who whenever he was at my house often imagined himself sleeping with my wife then that i would consider a sin. He may not do it, but he willfully entertains the thought because he likes the idea.

Seek the LORD while he may be found; call on him while he is near. Let the wicked forsake his way and the evil man his thoughts. Let him turn to the LORD, and he will have mercy on him, and to our God, for he will freely pardon. Isaiah 55:6-7 emp added

For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. Hebrews 4:12 emp added


Besides all sin starts in the mind, thats where the battlefield really is. We can have our sinful mind renewed, it your choise though if you want to.
Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is-his good, pleasing and perfect will. Romans 12:2

"Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable - if anything is excellent or praiseworthy - think about such things." Philippians 4:8
