Turning the other cheek

According to the Christian texts one should turn the other cheek even if it will mean their death or humiliation. This (on paper at least) would lead to a utopian society where everyone cared for everyone else and violence was a thing of he past. Nice, but unfortunatly people are power hungry control freaks.

I for one, believe in using as much force as is needed to stop a threat to myself or others. I ihave found that bullies do not stop, or get bored if you turn the other cheek. Instead, they realize that they have found someone that they can control. The only way to stop these bullies is to show that you can't be controlled by them.

I do not "turn the other cheek". If I am wronged by another (i.e. betrayed trust, hurt my feelings severely, steal from me, lie to me, etc.) I do not "seek vengence" but I will cut all ties to that person. In essence, they become dead to me. On the other hand, if the wrong is physical violence, I will match it. I do not let others mentally overpower me and I feel that is what happens when harm is done by another and I don't fight back... I am not an aggressive person but will not let others walk all over me. I may not win, but they will know they have been in a fight.

I must admit that the temptation to fight back is extreme in me. But I know in my heart which is the right choice and you are most certainly taking it. It is easier to do the same when you see somebody else doing it.

Dan,
So are you advocating passivity...even if it costs you your life?

There's a difference between turning the other cheek to an offense and letting someone kill you.

How far exactly, should one turn the other cheek?
If somebody hits you and then tells you revenge only begets revnge, yes you forgive them and don't strike them back. But then they hit you again and tell you the same thing, then they kick you on the floor, then they step on your neck and so on.
Theres only so much a person can take before thay will strike back, so where do you draw the line?

its easy do what the master said "if someone strikes you turn the other cheeck to him also" okay no problem he didn't say to do it agian.

I don't get "turning the other cheek", honestly. Don't beat them up until they lose consciousness. If they fight, fight back only as much as necessary. It is better to lose a fight defending what you believe in. Yourself. Then when it is over, seek a way that you will not have to fight them again, like Lycan said. I beliefe in self-defense.

I think that, beyond that hell of a dude we all know and love as Jesus, "turn the other cheek" has got to be the best thing to come out of Christianity or any religion, in my personal opinion. Wicca just doesnt sum it up in the same emotion fuelled way that the Bible does.

God created 'smart' christians...lol. If someone has the nerve to come up and strike me, they better be ready to get a mouth full of bloody chicklets!!! Don't touch me if I didn't ask you to. You can't go to Hell for defending yourself. I think that is a misinterpretation of the Word in some way or another.
Yea...
