Why Does America Lag Behind Other Countries in Supporting Working and Poor People?

Because anyone that even remotely shows open compassion for the poor/working class is labeled a Communist, and that word seems to scare the American public. You've seen how our media demonizes national health care and public assistance programs. The public just takes everything they see/hear on TV as the truth and is opposed to whatever the Fox news anchorman tells the they are. I love the place I live, but i really hate the people that are too dumb to let this country live up to its potential for all people, not only the wealthy.

So why does America lag behind other countries in supporting working and poor people? For instance, why do several countries have more upward mobility than the US? Again, why does the US have such a high rate of infant mortality? Or again, why does the US have such a high rate of redistributing wealth to the uber rich and such a low rate of redistributing wealth to the poor?

You might as well ask why the US isn't perfect.

We can ask similar questions such as:

Why didn't Germany invent the internet [foundation] instead of the United States?

Why didn't France send someone to the moon before the US did?

Why didn't the UK invent rock and roll instead of the US? Etc etc

America is w/o question a country in need of reform, but I'm not sure I'd trade our accomplishments for those of any other country.

P.S. The next time you 'google' something you can thank a couple of Americans.

Well.. it's a little different.

Why does America lag behind other countries in supporting working and poor people? is a question that is asking for the immediate attention of a current issue. It's extremely relevant.. because the basic foundation of government is to support the working and the poor people ("supposedly"). Your questions, are about the past.. and in that case - I wonder why America was so concerned inventing the internet, landing on the moon, and inventing rock and roll instead of actually taking care of the most relevant issue at any point in time in the history of this country, support for the working and poor people.

You know very well no one is debating the overall value or worth of America here -- yet you pretend your off topic points are relevant to this discussion.

1)That arrogance is the reason most foreigners hate us.
2)If people keep saying "our country's not perfect but it's better than everyone else's", we will never be able to enact any reforms this country so desperately needs.

Because the idea that the poor are lazy bums who just want handouts is so deeply ingrained.

The most egregious example I can think of is how they say that everyone gets an education, then tie school funding to property taxes so that kids in poor areas get a sub-standard one.

Agreed. Any attempt to improve the health and welfare of individuals below the poverty line is instantly labeled as Socialism. And while some attempts and programs are actually socialistic, others are simply labeled so for the shock factor left over from the McCarthy era.
In reality, socialist programs have been shown to be increasingly effective in the overall well-being of many EU countries.
While here in the US, many are still cowering under their school desks in preparation for the "Commies".

All part of the plan. If you look at it from my perspective, the U.S. is a Socialist state for the wealthy, and a fiefdom for the poor.

So, what you're telling me is that you'd rather have your home country invent the internet and be the first to the moon than support working and poor people so that many of them don't have to live in squalor and ill health?

Wow...wow.

It was the tone of the thread I was addressing. Another 'let's complain about America' thread. Despite the fact that America is far behind on infant mortality rates and doesn't have a perfect system to make everyone happy, fed and a full bank account...people are still wanting to come here.

I don't know why, we're so backwards and primitive.

It's not necessarily a "let's complain about America" thread, I like to see it more as constructive criticism. I don't think you're taking into account the people that say "why did I come here?" after they get here either. There's plenty of them. We should be able to have these conversations directly with our governing body instead of letting corporate lobbying and partisan politics dictate the public opinion for us.

I don't know why we're so backwards and primitive either. That's the problem, though.

Yes, America has its good points, but it has some pretty huge and glaring bad points, too. That's the point of the thread.

One of the reasons I'd say would be because the United States is run by a few mega-Corporations who care little about the poor, the workers, and care entirely about profits.

A very recent example would been with Microsoft launching an investigation into the treatment of workers in one of their suppliers' (KYE Systems) plants in China. I believe KYE produce some Mouse models which Microsoft sell. I'd imagine stuff like that happens all the time: big Corporation making poor foreigners work in sweatshops for dirt money.

Because in America, nothing is more important than the almighty dollar, in our nation he who dies with the most toys wins, the poor are lazy bums and the working poor just don't work hard enough, only a dirty commie would even dream about helping those who just refuse to do a hard days work.
