Prayer and justice

I have a 9 month old grandson who was born with a partial extra chromosome 13. As a result, he will see only light and dark with his left eye, and have only peripheral vision in the left. He is already quite developmentally delayed, and will have some degree of mental handicap, hopefully mild, but we will not know for some years.
Many of my friends have place him on their prayer lists, for which I am very grateful, however, I have a fundamental question.
This type of birth defect I understand occurs about 1 in 1600 live births, so there are many children afflicted througout the world, with this and other conditions. We live in the most privileged society, where there are many resources for him, where his parents have a good income, in short he is very fortunate.
If this is a just God, and we are just people, where do we get off asking Him for special consideration for our grandson when he is already much bettter off than 70% of the similar children living in the slums of Mexico, Bombay, Africa etc?

Hey John, welcome to the Religious Forums.

Sorry to hear about your grandson, but i'm sure he is indeed much better off than the many unfortunate children all around the world.

As far as your question is concerned, people ask for things that would best benefit themselves all the times and asking for special consideration for themselves or those they care about is of no difference. God for some is a representation of hope and for those who need it, this can be the difference between giving up or getting up.

I myself do not believe in God and even when I did, I always thought of it as selfish to often ask him for things that I needed when many around me endured far more difficult hardships than I. In the end however, we all want what is the best for us and after that, the best for those closest to us and those of us with whom we are most touched by.

Best of luck to you and your grandson, John.

You pray because even though the Father knows and provides for your needs, He also knows you need to voice your wants. No matter what we want in the world, it's His Will that is done. By praying we acknowledge and strengthen our Faith and (try to) find Peace in the turmoil.... and sometimes He even grants Miracles :shout
Philippians 4:6-7 6Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; 7and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.
