iPad mania

I must admit that I felt a bit disgusted with the way people in New York went nuts on trying to be the one of the first to get the new Apple iPad. I mean, the way some of those people carried on about getting one was like it was the most important thing in the world. It was sickening. This happens over an over again in this modern world while so many struggle just to find a morsel of food. Am I just getting old and cynical or is the world just too darn materialistic?

There must be something I'm not getting about the ipad. Is it essentially a big phoneless iphone?

I don't know what it is really, but all I know is people are behaving like it's their saviour.

From what I have seen from my neighbors it is nothing more than an oversized Ipod Touch.

Since it does not run flash, it is about worthless to use for internet.
But hey, Apple made a killing selling an oversized Ipod.

Stephen Fry called it the closest thing he's seen to a real-life version of "the Guide" from the Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy... but yeah, I believe you've got it about right.

I find my iPod Touch useful for browsing the internet, and Flash is just a matter of software. I'd be surprised if they aren't able to run Flash soon.

I heard something about free NetFlix downloads to your iPad? Apparently there are other neat, useful apps for it as well, but I haven't heard of anything earth-shattering so far.

Seems like a neat gadget, but I don't think it's going to replace the laptop yet.

Seems too many people can't seem to function without mod cons these days. Oh how I yearn for an apocalypse at times, to bring man to his knees and just to be grateful that he is alive.

Well, in many ways yeah we're too materialistic. Don't forget though that people in the more developed world are brought up to be consumers, nothing more.

true, but they should also have the brains to realize it

Of course. However, with all upbringings, one's enviroment obviously shapes their psychology. For instance we can presume that most people who're born and raised in Saudi Arabia will go on to become Muslims.

Just as people in certain parts of the World are born into Capitalist consumerism will end up as materialistic paranoid consumers. I share your concern, but I guess atleast you can decide yourself to not follow the masses with this sort of stuff :)

I work in the electronics field. I sell the stuff. I love my iphone so much I blew the money on a macbook.

But I did not look twice at the iPad. It is an experiment for apple. That's how I see it. Yeah it has it's pro's and cons and it is overpriced, but that is not the point. It is setting a new bar for communications technologies. If it weren't for these advances, RF would not exist and be so easily accessible for everyone here. Before long, iPad like things will be a standard and affordable for more and more people, just like with the iphones.

The thing with apple is that they get die hard fans. They are in love, and they don't care what comes out, how silly and experimental and pricey it is, they are in love cause it's apple. lol.

But anyway, these things connect us in a way that is almost magical. Technology is finding faster, easier, more streamlined ways to connect us, and apple is the biggest ****** it seems, over and over again lately.

Huh?
How does the Ipad set a new bar for communication technologies?
It is really nothing more than an Ipod touch with an over-sized screen.

I agree. It's not much now, but I think it will become much more as the idea and technology is further improved. Give it a good 3-4 years and see what it becomes and at what price compared to now. Just like the iPhone...

There is still no other phone that can compare in my opinion, even standard. Jailbreak an iPhone and it's all over. Other manufacturers are still struggling to keep up. The closest comparison now is android. Point being, the iPhone raised the bar in the cell phone world. The iPad will be a bar raising product in the computer world I think. It's just my opinion.

Regardless it's so silly to haul off and buy it. It is the first model. It will be so much more if you just give it a few years. An iPhone is better right now imo. The size doesn't hinder me at all.

Sorry I'll have to come back to this. Maybe communications technologies was the wrong category...

But it is the idea of the touch screen, mobile internet, and the versatility of the applications that sets it apart. The applications make it a worth while purchase for most. You can turn it into a kindle. How much is a kindle? $200 or so? You can download reference materials. For lawyers there is blacks law dictionary and other things. For medical professionals there is the drug reference guides. These people spend money to buy new reference materials every time they update. With an electronic app, not only can you browse the material electronically, but every time new drugs come out for instance, the update is free.

Here is a good pros and cons list:

BaltTech: Apple iPad: pros and cons - Gus Sentementes covers digital tech and innovation in Baltimore and beyond - baltimoresun.com

Those cons will be addressed in the next few years, and the price will have dropped as well. I bet you.

Sometimes advances in technology actually help to streamline every day life and save money in the long run... if needed. Some people really don't need such a tool.

Sorry I'm sucking at answering Mestemia's question still. I'll come back to it later. I need to go to bed.
