Start with alert subscriptions from various organization. If their web site offers it, subsribe to email alerts. The is not confined to just the organizations you support but any that have this service. I have used Crosstalk and Concerned Women of America to voice an "opposing" opinion. Use you oponnents to make your voice heard - all on their "dime". If they want something, you would probably not want it.

Go to sites like Congress.org by Capital Advantage Amonst other things they offer.

 • Congress.org is a public service of Capitol Advantage and is powered by the award-winning Capwiz™ grassroots advocacy solution. Capwiz is used by over 1200 leading non-profits, trade associations and media websites including AOL, Yahoo!, and MSN. If you would like to test drive Capwiz for your own organization, complete this form and we'll have a Capwiz site customized just for you in just one business day. Elected officials and candidates who wish to update their information on Congress.org, please contact our Research Department.

Contacting public officialls will not normally get the officials attention. Your letter, your fax, your email, will be opened by a staff member and tallied in a For or Against column. I don't fancy myself as good enough to have my response read by the official but it will be recorded.

Sometimes you will recieve a relpy (more like a form letter) not specifically addressing what you said but giving a gerneralized position of the official. It's greatest value, in my mind, is lining a bird cage but it's nice to get a franked letter.

The Sierra Club has tips on activism How to Be an Activist
There is no formal school for activists. No university degree qualifies the graduate to practice grassroots organizing. Environmental activists, like many other practitioners of social change, come in all shapes and sizes, from all walks of life, and even from all political parties. And all of us learn from experience. On the other hand, we should be able to benefit from the experience of others. Unfortunately, more often than not, people suddenly find themselves in a situation that requires a certain moral heroism. They had not planned to become activists.
An Activist's Handbook

The articles in this handbook are republished from Activism 101 and the Freedom Writer. They tend to be amero-centric, and some of them talk specifically about countering the religious right in the US but even with these biases they are a pretty good practical introduction to being politically active.

Anyone coming to Scotland to protest against the G8 nations at Gleneagles? It is a wonderful opportunity to make claims for equality, debt cancelations, etc etc

I think the G8 confernence became a platform to rally the Nations against terrorism.
