Christian Right Poised for Political Armageddon
http://www.religionnews.com/index.html

By Kevin Eckstrom and Adelle Banks

WASHINGTON -- The Rev. Jerry Falwell had been waiting 25 years for Friday (July 1), when religious conservatives would finally have a Supreme Court opening with a Republican president and Congress in office. “I think this is do or die,” said Falwell, adding that if religious conservatives can't get their way in this battle, they will ultimately fail. The retirement of Justice Sandra Day O'Connor is a chance to finally change their fortunes in the nation's highest court, sparking the end of liberal “activist judges.” At the same time, a progressive faith community will have a chance to build on recent momentum to steer the courts on a more moderate path. For political activists in a myriad of religious organizations, this is Armageddon, a battle for the soul of the Supreme Court.

To me the more pressing question is whether on the sixth commandment we'll be slandering anything that determines the values which are qualatative for a moral upbringing. Start counting your blessings anywhere and at anything.:(

If it is "more pressing" then it should be in another thread - not this one.

In the UK most would find the idea of a Christian Right a contradiction of terms. we associate Christian values to be left of centre.

Is that because people in the UK are generally already more to the left than Americans?

The British have a history of Social welfare; the Conservative party here are still regarded as being very 'liberal' compared to American Conservativism.

In the last eight or so years though, our left wing politicians have moved to the centre - literally taking the Conservative ideals as their own. The only major other party is the Liberal-Democrats who just try to be different from Labour and Conservatives, trying to be strong in easch of the other's weaknesses.:)

An established state church tends to get somewhat complacent, and can afford to espouse certain left-leaning ideals (even if it is mostly lip-service, in order to look good) like compassion, forgiveness etc., and that balances their overall image, since most churches are conservative on issues relating to sexuality and abortion.

The winner-takes-all system that exists in the US creates a dualistic mindset amongst voters, politicians -- and churches. If there already was a state church here, they could afford to embrace both leftish and rightish policies, to appeal to as big a portion of the electorate as possible (in order to remain in place as a state church) -- but since they are trying to get into power, they have to align themselves with one of the two parties... And sexuality and abortion (sadly) far outranks compassion, forgiveness and suchlike.

All that aside, it is downright disturbing to me, that a person who has said so many despicable things as Jerry Falwell can still remain in the media headlines.

But then again, Peter Popoff is back in business again so -- hey, there's a sucker born again every minute. :(

Not Just lip service. most churches in europe are left of centre espousing and fighting for Christs beliefs in compassion, forgiveness, charity etc., in this I would include the Baptists and Catholics.
The only major differences are abortion C of E support Catholic against. the thorny issue at the moment is Gay priests Both against. whilst in America there are anglican gay priests and one gay Bishop.

It is almost a difference in kind. even your most left wing democrats are far to the right of any thing we consider normal right wing here.
It is a totally different mind set.

Le plongeur avec attitude...
The religious right has done more harm to the cause of Christianity than any single group since the Romans crucified Jesus.

They only worry about their power base... Loving their neighbor is a foriegn concept to them.

I think politics and Christianity should not even be used in the same sentence...the political controversary has led to people putting Christians down because they feel differently than what they do...I think it hsa some afraid that the 'Christians' will take over the nation:eek: ...No true Christian would ever want to be in the political spotlight. We are contending with the fights that we are trying to turn this country on it's heel when in fact the only thing happening is the twists and turns that take place anyway in politics..Sure I think abortion is murder...but I won't superimpose my beliefs on other Americans who feel differently. We should have some impartial folks who look at things that are good for this country in office instead of a person who has an ajenda.

That's just my personal views.:)

What is un-American counters and represses the American dream. Of course, the dream may have lulled long ago into the idea of mental envy. That's why the concepts presented Rev. Falwell don't seem to perturb me as much as others. Does he really mean what he is saying? He represents a bad example but a sinners reproach may be fair to some extent. For instance his attitude for marching for the perfect family, his idea that sexist superiority is actually the fact of life. It scares good willed people as well as the falures of human conduct by law and order. He does allow for consolation to the law breakers of the world. Under the existing government civil disobedience and some innocent law breaking may be revealed in perspective. PAH I think getting a life is for everyone to get involved in the life difficulties not just by watching the Jerry Springer show or hiding in the cloak room of the silent majority. I believe i have made my point.

Thank you.
