What is the most ideal society humanity has known to date?

Honestly, I can't choose. Each society has had it's different pros and cons. Lot of good ones so far, though.

I haven't done any research to confirm this, but the first thing to pop into my mind when I read your question was modern Norway and Denmark.

My understanding is the standard of living is high. They have great health (though that is changing) and healthcare. I think crime rates are some of the lowest. And interestingly, they are some of the least religious people in the world.

Seriously, I have to agree with this.

On the not so literal side though...can I put in my vote for the society depicted in Star Trek?

Fifth Century Athens? Modern America? Soviet Russia? Republican Spain? Tudor England? Republican France? The Byzantine Empire?

What do you think?

I would imagine that Saddam Husein would have said that his dictatorship was ideal.
And let us not forget the likes of Hitler.

So the first thing I have to ask is:
Ideal for who?

If you use crime statistics as a measure of social harmony then the Native Church of America would rated Highly. But it could just be the use of Peyote (Mescaline) that suppresses their aggression.

Dude, we gotsa put the Turkish Empire out there. Suleiman the Lawgiver was so cool! Also, Persia under Cyrus the Great and the next few successors.

Of course, these societies crumbled under later successors who were, frankly, insane. Greece during antiquity could also be considered pretty ideal, they made countless advances, including the invention of formal democracy. As well, they were pretty liberal if my understanding is correct.

England was pretty good for a while.

Aussieland has always sucked, and Canada is like... Gross... I consider Ideal societies to be those that have actually done something. Persia and the Ottomans conquered a lot, while maintaining a fantastic civic system. I'm also partial to meritocracies, which is why I put the Ottoman Empire at the top of my list.
