I just want to make one clarification on my belief, I do not believe that heaven, as in pearly gates, will get destroyed, but the heavens, as in the stars/plantes/galaxies out there. It has been my experience that when the Bible says heavens, it refers to the "outer space".
gonna have to disagree there, firstly thankfully the heavens remain pure as man hasnt reached them apart from landing on the moon also it says the new HEAVEN not the new HEAVENS therefore implying gods kingdom not the milky way,if it says HEAVENS in some parts then maybe your right

can you tell me which version bible your quoting from as im unsure if its the old KJV as i dont recall the passages being laid out like that
i use many translations but they basically mean the same, such as the AV That says they have corrupted themselves ,their spot is not the spot of his children they are a perverse and crooked generation (Deuteronomy 32;5) and yes the other one i quoted was the NWT as i prefer this translation

I don't want to speak for may, but being a JW, I believe may would be using the New World Translation.

Now on to the topic, just before the verse in question comes this.

2 Peter 3:10-12

Note it says the heavens will be dissolved and the elements will melt. To me this implies that the physical universe (the heavens and the earth) will be gone, to be replaced by? I don't know, but I am pretty sure it will be better than the one we are in now :D

Edit: I changed a typo in my first sentence.
yes it does read that way ,but in the bible heaven is sometime refered to as the ruling power and according to the bible the ruling powers of humans will be done away with
The Bible associates heaven with rulership. (Acts 7:49) The "new heavens" is a new government that will rule over the earth. It is new because it will replace the present system of rulership; it is also a new development in the outworking of God’s purpose. It is the Kingdom for which Jesus taught us to pray. (Matthew 6:10) Since God is its Source and he dwells in heaven, it is called "the kingdom of the heavens."—Matthew 7:21.notice also that in 2 peter 3;7 it is only the ungodly that are destroyed if the earth was litraly burnt up no one would survive not even the Godly ones, so this is symbolic of the preasent rulership coming to an end and only the Godly being on the earth. in other words a new earthly society of people who are willing to live under this new heavenly rulership

njcl,

It does say "heavenS" not "heaven" in 2 Peter. I just looked in the KJV to check.

The Bible associates heaven with rulership. (Acts 7:49)
Were you putting forth than Acts 7:49 associates heaven with rulership? Just want to clarify.

Since God is its Source and he dwells in heaven, it is called "the kingdom of the heavens."—Matthew 7:21
Hmm, differing translations and all. My KJV says "the Kingdom of Heaven."

notice also that in 2 peter 3;7 it is only the ungodly that are destroyed if the earth was litraly burnt up no one would survive not even the Godly ones,
"With God all things are possible."

I think we will just have to disagree on this, I believe that there will be a new physical earth and heavens, you interpret it differently. Yours may be correct, or mine could be. Only time will tell :)

Ps. 37:9, 11, 29: "Evildoers themselves will be cut off, but those hoping in Jehovah are the ones that will possess the earth . . . The meek ones themselves will possess the earth, and they will indeed find their exquisite delight in the abundance of peace. The righteous themselves will possess the earth, and they will reside forever upon it."also it says that

"The upright are the ones that will reside in the earth, and the blameless are the ones that will be left over in it. As regards the wicked, they will be cut off from the very earth; and as for the treacherous, they will be torn away from it."—Proverbs 2:21, 22.so this seems to me that the blameless are the ones that will inherit the earth not the litral earth being destoyed

"The world [of wicked mankind] is passing away and so is its desire, but he that does the will of God remains forever."—1 John 2:17
