Is it ok to use bad language?

I don't like "bad " language.

For more years that I care to remember, I objected to the use of religious or anatomical words for emphasis. Personally, I manage quite well without them. Being a language professional, I regard the use of such abusive words a sign of not being able to make full use of your language. It's also much more fun to be inventive when you really want to stress a point.

Sometimes, of course, I happen to break my rules. I might release the odd name for the Devil or similar entities from my vocal chords. But I never ever (loudly at least), despite knowing that that area is perfectly acceptable for swearing in the Slavonic languages, use the names of body parts in cursing.

Personal or moral principles?
Morals are now involved? I see nothing ethically/morally wrong with swearing, and I have not seen any evidence presented to prove it to be ethically/morally wrong. I don't have to prove that it isn't (you don't have to prve a negative).

If one believes in not swearing, good for them. But I base my beliefs (as much as I can) on evidence. I cannot believe swearing is wrong unless presented with some form of evidence. That's my personal principle. I very much doubt that this evidence exists.

However, I will attempt to not swear for two weeks, and see if, magically, I become more verbose and intelligent.

I believe the key is to monitor your behavior and speech based on the company your in at the time. I mean really, if I'm speaking with my mother I use language appropriate to the situation. If I'm slugging a couple dozen beers with some bikers, well, when in Rome...

Your not being a hypocrite, your adapting to the situation, which is a social skill.
In addition, I'm sure if you never use "foul" language and you do occasionally hang out with "toughs" that they accept you and respect you for who you are.

But its not fun to look like an idiot using words that really exist, but no one uses them, and alot of people don't know what they mean.
