my view on paganism

Lady Crimson

credo quia absurdum
although I consider myself to be agnostic, I love most pagan religions. I find them so interesting and so original and yet, so much alike modern religions if you regard them closely. I especially enjoy reading stories and legends of ancient mythology. Have you read anything or know anything about the daco-romans (traco-gets)? I found this mythology very interesting and if you are as curios as I am, I'm sure you'll look them up. If you do read anything about them could you reply so we can have a discussion about this mythology?

Hey Lady Crimson we have a bunch of pagans here and you probably just made them all do the happy pagan dance. I feel what you are saying though. Paganism is strong here in Austin and I see them all the time when I go out to the various parks. Always in nature and spreading happiness when they are in nature. I can respect that even if I don't percieve their Goddesses to exist. Very interesting culture they have. Hope you like it here and glad you found this place.

hehe! That makes me think of a bumpersticker I put on my ex's car when we were together. It was a bunch of silouettes (sp) of people dancing and it said "Happy Naked Pagan Dance!" hehehe.

I lived with a normadic pagen tribe for a while, they believe there are sprits in everything,so they respect the enviroment.I never heard of any robbery among them, their women can choose as many mates as she likes until she is married.A person who is mentally challanged is treated with respect, and all visitors are wined and dined for 7 days before they ask one their bussiness. It's a pity formal religon was introduced.

In my experience most pagan people i meet are deeply spirtitual . I am one of those cant-make-up-thier-mind-types. I do not really belive in god but i dont really believe in tarot cards and all that. Before anyone rushes to tarot defense i should tell you i am part gypsy and so have grown up around palm reading and tarot. I just feel like i have nothing to beleive in.

I know what you mean about not believing in "god" dreena. My mom asked me the other day if I was atheist and I said no, but only started to wonder a few days later whether it was possible that I was. I know I don't believe in the same type of "god" that the monotheistic religions teach about (especially Christianity, in which I was raised), but I feel like I have some conception of the divine. For now I don't believe that it existed outside of our minds, but that is somehow different from it being a figment of our imaginations. . .somehow. I'm not all to sure on that subject yet, but I'm working on it.

As for my views on paganism, I'm finding it's a lot deeper and more complicated than a lot of people think. And I think pagans are usually stereotyped as being either really stupid and non-scientific, or well. . really stupid and non-scientific. Glad to find out that isn't true.

*blinks* There's a bumpersticker that says that?!

I thought we at RF had originated the Happy Heathen Pagan Dancing... *looks slightly disappointed.*

And welcome!

i am very interested in ancient religion. it could be the key piece of the puzzle why religions became what they are today. i think wiccan is the oldest known.

Wicca is a new religion... 20th century.
I believe hinduism is the oldest. The Norse and Celtic religions are ancient as well.

Hinduism is a post-Vedic monopoly of philosophies and religious sects. It originated a little before Buddhism around 800 BC, when mystical philosophy dominated over the old Indo-Aryan Vedics. Allthough Hindus will tell you a different story.

The oldest known sites of religious activity comes from Mesopotamia (Samara and Ubaid) and Anatolia (Catal Huyuk). They pre-date the Neolithic european activity. The Indus Valley civilization is also in the mix.

Lycan is correct, Wicca is quite new. Hinduism is said to be the oldest religion, But I believe the primitive spiritualities of ancient hunters and gatherers to be the oldest.

well yeah, if that's how we all originated. Some mythologies have it both ways, there were both cities and the hunter-gathers in the beginning, cuz the gods built the first cities. I guess we'll never know for sure how we originated though :)

Around the 1950's to be slightly more exact.

Food for thought....wouldn't agnosticism be the oldest spiritual structure? I mean...believing in a god is not an innate idea, we are not born believing in anything...
