Saddam to be tried on 12 charges

Saddam Hussein could face up to 500 charges at a tribunal, but will be tried on just 12, the Iraqi prime minister's spokesman has said.
Laith Kuba said the ex-dictator, who is being held within a US-run detention facility in Baghdad, is likely to be tried within the next two months.
However, he said prosecuting Saddam on all 500 charges would be a "waste of time".
Mr Kuba said: "There should be no objection that a trial should take place within that time. It is the government's view that the trial of Saddam should take place as soon as possible."
He added: "The judges are confident that he and his regime members will be convicted of these (12) charges." They include the murders of tens of thousands of Shiites and Kurds following the Gulf War that liberated Kuwait from Iraqi occupation.
The killings include the gassing of Kurds in the northern town of Halabja in 1988.:jam:
