Saddam to be tried on 12 charges

Saddam Hussein could face up to 500 charges at a tribunal, but will be tried on just 12, the Iraqi prime minister's spokesman has said.

Laith Kuba said the ex-dictator, who is being held within a US-run detention facility in Baghdad, is likely to be tried within the next two months.

However, he said prosecuting Saddam on all 500 charges would be a "waste of time".

Mr Kuba said: "There should be no objection that a trial should take place within that time. It is the government's view that the trial of Saddam should take place as soon as possible."

He added: "The judges are confident that he and his regime members will be convicted of these (12) charges." They include the murders of tens of thousands of Shiites and Kurds following the Gulf War that liberated Kuwait from Iraqi occupation.

The killings include the gassing of Kurds in the northern town of Halabja in 1988.:jam:

But the men determine ME with a problem with Women. Must be fun. To ignore God in the name of thinking of empty fields of unfaith to one;s children.

what i would like to know is how come he is the one on trial. i think that those who put him in office and those who turned a blind eye on his actions should be sitting right next to him in the accused seats.

Bu$h should be on trial too.
Yes, today I have been surfing the net for Baghdad before and after the war. And I am afraid to say the death toll has drastically increased since our attack on Iraq. But this is the way we have always done things. Look at how we got this land in the first place. Apparently we are the only ones who are allowed to be big bullies.:(

You can't apportion all the blame to yours and our forces; from the day that Saddam was in American hands, most of the deaths have been caused by terrorists who would like to take control of Iraq for their own purposes.

michael, do you even realize how many people we have killed in iraq? you have to keep in mind this war has been going on since 1991! we went in, we sent troops home, said the war was over, yet we dropped a bomb every single day since. not to mention all the deaths caused by the santions. by the way the vast majority of those deaths were children under 5 years old! as far as the deaths of the ****es goes. just before bush sr. pulled the troops out of iraq in the 90's, he told the ****es in the south that if they uprised WE would finanically and stragicly back them in the cout-de-tat. so as soon as the ****es uprised, we renigged on our end of the deal. the result, many, many, many were killed, jailed, tortured, became homeless. as far as the kurds in the north are concerned, i will tell it to you like it was told to me from caldeeans who left iraq. this is their story. " the kurds had a habbit of going into non-kurds businesses and homes and shooting these places up. saddam told them to stop, and they didn't. so, saddam gassed them and did the same thing to them." sa far as saddam goes, we put him in the big seat. we trained him how to subvert, torture, etc. the people. hell, we even gave him the weapons to do it. before we invaded this country, the people had a good standard of living. obesity was a big problem for iraqis, they had the best hospitals in asia and good colleges. after we invaded, starvation, lack of basic needs i.e. clean water, lights. loss of the middle class, systematic murders and a over 1 million dead! we are not the sweethearts you may like to think that we are. however, i do like your idealism.

Its true that American forces have done atrocious things, but its also true that they aren't the only ones. Terrorist guerillas, British troops, Germans, mere Iraqi civilians, Canadians, soldiers and civvies on all sides from all countries have done hideous things throughout this war and all wars. Many times the atrocities are totally justified by the circumstances, and sometimes they aren't. Unfortunately, atrocities are one of the major by-products of wars and, while with great effort they can be lessened, they can never be eliminated altogether.

This is why we SHOULD be working on ways to get rid of wars in the first place!

The problem is that the government in Iraq is still unable to take full control. those who want power think if they can stir up enough trouble ,the government will fall.
The extremists are using their bombing tactics mostly against their own people.
If we all left it would get a lot worse before it got better.
The USA wont back UN forces to take over Bush doesn't trust them.

Till there is a sufficiently powerful government to enforce a period of peace not much will change.
