It shouldn't anywhere, ever, but here in the US it is a hot topic because we have so many biblical literalist/fundamentalist types who think it is their duty to make everything they think or to be more accurate, feel, into law.
There is a big movement here to have the science teachers either not teach evolution at all as a scientific theory, or if it is taught at all, then it is to be taught as an alternative to the other "theory" (it is not a scientific theory, but they think calling it one will make it thus) of creationism or intelligent design.
There is not one bit of evidence to support creationism/ID at all, and yet, we have an actual fight on our hands in this country merely in trying to teach kids what is real, actual up to date science in our schools. Religious groups in the US have so much power it is obscene, and they keep trying to either grab more, or hang on to what they have, depending on one's viewpoint, I suppose, often interfering in political/public life.
That, sadly, is why it is being brought up.
