Creationism in Public Schools

In Ireland we have religion taught as a subject in public schools (or as we call them schools) but by religion they generally mean catechism.
This more to do with the throwback to when the religious institutions ran the show. It also doesn’t help that folks like Bertie Ahern had a whole beef with what he called ‘aggressive secularism’. The truth is that the only properly secular schools, the Educate Together schools, will need at least a generation to pass before they are properly adopted.

I originally attended a covent school and then a state school, I didn't notice much of a difference, tbh. I think most people here want religion taught in school, as it saves them the bother.

What's there to teach about Creationism anyways? Does it take more than a few minutes? We cannot know anything about the process of creation anyways, so I'm sure parents are perfectly suitable to tell their kids the story. Evolution on the other hand is science and there is a lot to discuss.

People just feel threatened. They have every single day of their child's lives to remind them that god created everything 6,000 years ago, and can bring their child into their belief reinforcement every Sunday at church....But when schools spend a day or a week teaching the kid or teen about evolution, all hell breaks loose. Just goes to show how weak the story of Creation really is.

Indeed. Here in Germany the word "creationism" is not even mentioned in biology. Why should it?

It shouldn't anywhere, ever, but here in the US it is a hot topic because we have so many biblical literalist/fundamentalist types who think it is their duty to make everything they think or to be more accurate, feel, into law.

There is a big movement here to have the science teachers either not teach evolution at all as a scientific theory, or if it is taught at all, then it is to be taught as an alternative to the other "theory" (it is not a scientific theory, but they think calling it one will make it thus) of creationism or intelligent design.

There is not one bit of evidence to support creationism/ID at all, and yet, we have an actual fight on our hands in this country merely in trying to teach kids what is real, actual up to date science in our schools. Religious groups in the US have so much power it is obscene, and they keep trying to either grab more, or hang on to what they have, depending on one's viewpoint, I suppose, often interfering in political/public life.

That, sadly, is why it is being brought up.

I saw that Kitzmiller vs. Dover Trial.
I wondered why it took longer than 1 day to come to a verdict.
