Purpose of life?

maxpower

So seriously? 19 replies and no real answers? Now specifically to anyone who believes in the Bible, anyone who believes in Christ, anyone who calls themself a Christian? Why did God put us on this earth?

Your question assumes a fact not in evidence.

To wit: That there is a purpose beyond what YOU decide.

There is no evidence for any such "larger purpose" and indeed where would it come from and why?

Can anyone give me breifly, in one or two sentences, what is the purpose of life? Why did God put us on this earth?
The purpose of life is to prepare us to become like our Father in Heaven. We are that we might have joy, and God's work and glory is to bring to fruition our immortality and eternal life.

Is everyone on this site an athiest, it is lovely that you all understand that to know what God's plan is presuposes there is a God, and I can appreciate that if that is your belief you will latch onto any chance to make that point, but Again, this particular thread is for those who believe in God, in the bible, and/or in Christ. Let's debate my presuppositions in another thread, shall we.

Perhaps if you posted your question a board reserved for believers you might answers more to your liking.

Just a thought.;)

Oh, I think many do. ;)

Again your answer assumes several things not in evidence. More than several actually.

But since you postulate this god thing why don't you ask him/it/she, whatever. Surely your "god" would know.:thud:

Umm, yes. But I have already expressed my opinion.

Is everyone on this site an athiest,
This board has a wide variety of beliefs and viewpoints. Sometimes on a board like this you will get all the godless heathens replying first, sometimes it is the believers who get there first. Give it time and you will get diverse selections of responses. Or…

There is actually a section of this board where you can post a question and get answers from a single faith only. If you want you can post this question there and ask only Christians to answer. Whichever you choose, I hope you have fun.

Maxpower, you might want to follow up on OmarKhayyam's suggestion and PM one of the staff to see if they would move your thread to another forum, one where only those who believe in God could post. I think it's theists' opinions you're really after, isn't it?

Friend maxpower,

It is evident that your mind is looking for answers that will suit it.
Why did God put us here?"
You are asking fundamental question but have already decided that *god* has sent you.
To start fundamentally one has to start with *who am I?*
Best wishes on your search.
Love & rgds

A little more advice- just because someone gives an answer different than yours, does not mean they are wrong. I am a theist, I believe in God- and I believe that God wants us to worship Him and to live for Him, but atheists and agnostics are not going to have that same belief at all. I think a question like "what is the purpose of life?" will have as many answers as there are people alive.

I think the purpose of life, if any, is unknown and will remain unknown.

If I had to guess I wouldn't know where to start, because I seem to disagree with everything that I can come up with.

For the person who believes that GOD sent us to earth to be in service of Him suggests a lazy or powerless GOD, a GOD of need. This usually is not the intention of the believer proposing this purpose.

For a person to suggest that we were sent here by GOD to become just like Him suggests an existence that is not the individuals and extreme examples can be considered a form of puppetry. In another way, we could liken this person to living a vicarious life through another’s achievements (like the teenager who idolizes and wants to become their favorite pop celebrity). This seems like an illogical step because if we were put here to know or become like GOD it would seem unnecessary for GOD to have created a physical expanse in the first place. It would be easier to prepare for this purpose in whatever realm GOD resides. This physical existence offers too many chances, to many opportunities for human entities to sway from that purpose and one would constantly have to reinforce faith about why their God would gamble away such a purpose and admit to themselves that everything that comes forth from their God's mouth could go unfulfilled and be undone. Living a physical existence in and for the lofty expectations and desires of a hopeful deity would seem to others like a wasted opportunity and a futile effort or existence.

I believe that we are already eternal and GOD-like (in spirit-form, not in purpose or personality) before we incarnate into a physical existence and I believe that we remain gods when we arrive and begin our physical existence. The only difference is our understanding, purpose and location. For example, just because a human has decided to dress up in scuba equipment and submerge themselves into the sea does not make them any less human and any more like a fish. The reason or purpose of a (human) scuba diver diving into a body of water is not to hope or have faith that they will someday become like a fish (not in this lifetime anyway). In fact, in most instances, the scuba diver’s purpose for being underwater completely differs from the aquatic sea life that they encounter. The challenges that a scuba diver faces in this environment can also parallel our physical existence. Movement and breathing is challenged as well as performing other human behaviors but it still does not make the diver any less human.

From what I have evidenced it is not everyone’s purpose to become like God. It would seem more believable that humans are carving a meaningful (perhaps memorable) individual physical existence for themselves. Which parts of these purposes were planned before a physical incarnation only bears relevance to the individual enacting this existence.

We are not supposed to judge or compare another’s purpose for this physical existence and I think many theists believe that is one of their purposes. This can become evident through the self-doubt and disappointment that they sometimes feel when GOD other individuals do not conform to their way of thinking. We are not qualified to label a purpose good or bad, right or wrong, what is or is not fulfilling or pleasing to GOD.

One of the main purposes of a physical existence for any entity whether one decides to incarnate as a human, animal, plant or insect is the experience of BEing. I do not think that this physical existence is a camp for GOD’s children. I believe that it doesn’t even have to be a proving or learning ground for a better or higher existence. The purpose of why a spiritual entity incarnates into a physical existence may only have meaning to the participant and that purpose or meaning could be as varied as there are stars in the universe.

Hi maxpower, welcome to RF, very good questions.

Since God is omnipresent throughout all creation, each and every life form is its expression, you just happen to be the differentiated self conscious unique expression of the Cosmos in the space that you occupy. The purpose of an apparent 'part' of indivisible universal spirit incarnating in these human material life forms is to unfold even further evolutionary expression, that of true spiritual expression,..its not a gift, life is short, and there is much to accomplish,..Namaste.

Greetings! :)

In the Baha'i view, our purpose in this life is twofold:

  1. to aquire the spiritual virtues we'll need both in this life and the Next, and
  2. to carry forward an ever advancing, spiritually-based civilization.
Best! :)
