Genesis contradictions?

I've heard rabbis speak on the theory of Adam created as a hermaphrodite.
I've also heard rabbis speak on the idea that the first creation of male and female involved a female before Eve, one called Lilith.
Either is plausible if one interprets the Torah literally.

I think Adam and Eve, for the sake of trying not to derail the main topic of this thread, are viewed as actual living beings who where the beginnings of the genealogy listed throughout the beginning of the bible. This was important enough and evident when looking at the writings of the NT. The genealogy is important in establishing Yeshua's bloodline. Luke traces Yeshua's genealogy back to Adam. Even though Matthew doesn't name Adam you can clearly see that the names (for the most part) match the names of the family (bloodline) of Adam which Luke cited. Paul in his writings does not regard Adam as a "literary type" but regards him as an actual person. Adam is not a group of people. Eve is not a group of people. These individual people are treated as real people in the bible. Adam, by biblical standards, was and should be regarded as a real man and Eve as a real woman. This has all seemed to have changed due to scientific discovery. So maybe as far as contradictions go...Adam and Eve contradict what we know about man on the planet and how long we've been here. Various scientific fields of study are painting a very different picture than the one presented in the bible. Although we can find some truths in the bible it should not regarded as an (accurate) history book nor should it be regarded as a science book.....

sandy, who frequently offers up totally baseless pedantry, would have us think Adam a hermaphrodite due to grammar (about which he is pervasively ignorant) but gives no thought to such things as Gen 6:1-7 or 9:5,6. He's simply clueless.

Jayhawker, who frequently offers up baseless antagonism and affrontery, has offered nothing that begins to explain his assertion of me being ignorant on this topic. As to Genesis 6:1-7 or 9:5,6: offering up verses does not an argument make.

He's good at that. ;)

However, despite Jay's horrible people skills (at least online), he is very well learned in Bible studies, and knows what he's talking about. It would be good to ignore his "holier than thou art" attitude and ask him to share his knowledge.
How amusing. Someone get's on a debate forum and then has to be asked to share. does this seem absurd to anyone else?

this is true. God does forbid incest via Mosaic Law, yet we see the daughters of Lot sleeping with their father, and having children by him.

regarding the Bible, much of the human behavior it records stands as an example of what God does *not* want us to do. things which God never commands, sanctions, or permits (or which He has forbidden) are done over and over by many generations. the Bible records the good, the bad, and the ugly of human behavior. this can serve, however, as a warning for readers reading through the lens of faith.

one consequence of Lot's daughters sleeping with their father was the birth of a son who would father the Moabite nation, a nation which would become famous for its arrogance, evil, and corruption.

the Bible gives many examples of behaviors which humans with free will participate in, but which is stated to be clearly wrong. the Bible's inclusion of this behavior does not mean God is sanctioning it, or giving it the green light. merely that the choices of sinful, prideful, misguided, and cruel people are shown side by side with examples of trust, righteousness, humility, and grace.

i have come across some things in the book of genesis that i believe are contradictory, many of them involving adam and eve.an example that has stuck out to me is although christians say incest is wrong, the children of adam and eve would have to have had an incestuous relationship (unless of course there were other humans present).i would like to hear a christian defense of this.

Yes it does: to me.

Nevertheless, we can complain about how absurd it is, or accept the fact that it is the way he is, and go with it.

Gen 6:1-7 and 9:5,6. :)

I'm reading those verses now, and I'm not sure what you're citing them for.

6:1-7 deals with the Nephilim mating with humans, and the evil of humanity.

9:5,6 is just about not eating things that are still alive, and not killing other humans.

Could you please enlighten me as to what you're trying to say? (if you want Sandy to try and figure it out himself, you can PM me if you'd prefer that)

I've already figured it out. Jaywalker is trying to imply that Adam mated with Eve thus denying that he was created an hermaphrodite. He's obviously missing something.
