Catholicism in the USA

Are there a lot of Catholic people in America (proportionally)?

I sometimes get the feeling that American culture is 'Protestant' (I'm not sure how to word this) and Catholicism suspicious. Is this in any way true?

It depends on where you go, I guess. Some states are more Catholic than others. In Ohio, for instance, for every public school, there's also a private Catholic one nearby. In sports, we have GCL and GGCL, which stand for Greater Catholic League and Girls Greater Catholic League. We've got a lot of Catholics in Ohio, and in bordering states like Indiana, Michigan, and Pennsylvania.

I may be totally off base, but it seems to me that the North is more Catholic, and the South is more Protestant.

With the influx of Latin American immigrants, the US is becoming more and more Catholic, but there has always been a fairly decent portion dating back to the early 20th century, when Irish, Italian, and Polish immigrants (among others) brought Catholicism here with them.
