Somehow, I miss the "implication" for flat. The word for end is also the word for boundary.
Perhaps it is because you want to miss the implication in spite of overwhelming evidence.

Well, I am completely underwhelmed. Maybe I just put a premium on accuracy that others don't. How can you get FLAT AS A PANCAKE FROM THESE SCRIPTURES??? Please elucidate.

ND.... I think you are missing the point.... the verses provided are in no way 100% convincing..... but they are reflective of the reality.... historian and theologians have documented this.... a Biblical commentary from the NAB:

God's heavenly seat rests above the superior water. Below these waters lies the firmament or sky which resembles an overturned bowl and is supported by columns. Through the openings (floodgates) in its vault the superior water fall down upon the earth in the form of rain or snow. The earth is a platform resting on columns and surrounded by waters, the seas. Underneath the colums lie the inferior waters. In the depths of the earth is Sheol. the home of the dead.

This was the same prescientific concept of the universe that was held by the Hebrew's pagan neighbors.

The article also has a neat graphic of the scene.... but it's quite clear in all the info I have read that the ancient Hebrews thought the earth was flat..... I am confused to why this is something unsettling and worth attacking?

I am not a Hebrew scholar. I cannot go farther than the reliable dictionaries and commentaries that I cite above, which you have not specifically addressed.

The issue is NOT what the Israelites believed or did not believe. They often did not believe God.

The issue IS whether the Bible indicates that the earth was "flat as a pancake" or not. The evidence for that is extremely underwhelming at the moment.

... scratching and clawing and frenetically clinging to the very inerrancy that you so often declare is nowhere proclaimed in the Bible. The Bible was written by men, primitive men, and reflects both their backwardness and their aspirations.

We've had this discussion before!
Mat 4:8 Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor. 9"All this I will give you," he said, "if you will bow down and worship me."
Assuming Jesus was really shown all the kingdoms of the world how would this be possible when the earth has about a 26 mile horizen. Looks like a strong indication the bible at that point thought the earth was flat.

It clearly can't be flat if it has a mountain. Perhaps we should just call it bumpy ... somewhat reminiscent of the road travelled by some apologists.

I don't believe that the Bible claims to be inerrant.

But I don't buy that it claims that the earth is flat either.

As for the Matthew verse, it would seem that they ALSO thought that they could see all the way to Rome from such a high mountain. Possibly, the vision was supernatural or an illusion. Satan IS the Father of Lies.

Why is everyone so intent on keeping their assumptions here? I don't see FLAT anywhere in those scriptures.

I guess these people believe in a flat earth: http://www.abc.net.au/4corners/default.htm

Or are we so arrogant to feel that literary license can not be used by any other society?

The Flat Earth BibleSeveral verses quoted and concepts developed.

The Flat-Earth Belief of Bible Writers More verses. I like Daniel 4:7-8, "I saw a tree of great height at the center of the world." How would a tree be growing in a center of a globe?
Geez Bob...where've you been?! There's a hole at the North Pole and if you go through it there are people living inside the planet. That's obviously where the tree is.
Do I have to explain everything to you people?:tsk:
