Where is Heaven ?

When I was a child, heaven was is the sky, hell was somewhere down in the earth.
For those who believe in this concept, I'm curious to hear your idea of a physical locality for heaven and hell.

No response?

I'm disappointed. I truly would like to hear your thoughts on this.
Is there another possibility, other than physical?
I am not being sarcastic or anything sophomoric like that. I am simply interested to hear some thoughts on this.

Hi Faust,

For me, heaven and hell don't exist. You can feel as if you are in hell, or feel as if you are in heaven - depending on your conscience.

I do believe though in reincarnation, and a spirit world - for me that is where we are, but in a dimension or frequency that we are unaware of, as humans.:)

Thank you for your response Michel.
I was expecting a myriad of possibilities in reply to this question. I'm not looking to refute anyones beliefs. I'm glad that you have not taken that line. From what time I have been able to visit this sight I have formed the opinion that you and many others here are open to discuss a wide range of religious and secular topics.
I can only hope for further interest in this thread as I believe it could lead to a very interesting exchange of ideas.

You're welcome; I do know that there are some who will scoff at my beliefs, but I am comfortable enough with the beliefs for that not to bother me.

Yor last statement is all about the Forum - an exchange of ideas, in mutually respected company. (Unfortunately that is not always the case, but Ideals are not called ideals for nothing!):)

for me there is only the Olam Ha-Ba, the World to Come....
only problem is there are a few different interpretations of what this is....
is it the messianic age?
an after life?

i guess i'll find out eventually

Its likely that Heaven and Hell were thought to be literally below the earth or high in the sky in biblical times.. nobody was able to reach these places..
However, with space flight and astrology we can show that heaven is further away than we previously thought and with hell, well although we cant drill deep enough, im pretty sure that belief is being reconsidered.
I expect most Christians will nowadays feel that these are places beyond the physical world.

For my particular Buddhist tradition, heaven and hell are right here on earth, in this life. We cycle through those and 8 other life-conditions every day. These conditions arise and subside in response to what happens in our daily life; and generally in response to the causes we make each day. Both life states are a function of karma, or effect, from the causes we make.

Heaven is all around us. Most cannot see it because of the "veils" as they are often called. When I commune with God, I see Heaven. I see Heaven in my children's laughter. I do not think I can explain it to one who has not seen. But I know it is very frustrating to look high and low for something just to find it right there in front of your eyes. Do not look to the sky for Heaven, but look within your own heart, for it is there that you will find the Kingdom of Heaven.

I am encouraged by the responses I'm receiving.

Since I have no belief in an afterlife, I personally think that it is a matter of perception.
Life is what you make of it. I agree with the majority of the posts here in as much as my personal concept of heaven and hell deals with the here and now.

My personal belief is that there is no physical location of heaven. I believe that the physical world exists because God created it, and when we die, we leave this physical plane. I don't know where we go from there, but it's some place where we are close to God, aka heaven.

According to some sources there are 7 heavens and 7 Earths/hells, each heaven is ruled over by different races of angels, Seraphim, Cherubim, Powers etc. God's seat is in the seventh heaven, but the dead go to one of the others, the 3rd i think, so never actually get to meet God, the only ones who ever get to commune with God in person are the Seraphim.

Halcyon I just went to biblegateway.com and ran some of the words through their search engine on the NIV version of the Bible. The two angels of the 7 th heaven zeburial and turtbebial are not in there nor is the word Cassiel which is the angel said to rule that heaven. I didn't find:

shamayim or shamain in the first heaven
raquia or raqia in the 2nd
sagun or shehaquim in the 3rd either in a search.

I did find the word zebul (6th heaven) but he was a human governer of a city called shechem and is mentioned in judges 9:30.

The 4th heaven interestingly is called machen which is german for make . There was no german text of the bible until the gutternberg from my understanding which was written in the 1400's.

Yiddish and german sound really similar but yiddish is associated with judaism which from my understanding, has no belief in heaven.

I am thining that webpage did not use the bible as a source for its info.

My view on heaven is from the Catechism of the Catholic Church:

"Heaven" does not refer to a place but to God's majesty and his presence in the hearts of the just. Heaven, the Father's house, is the true homeland toward which we are heading and to which, already, we belong.

Lol, i dunno. I think a lot of that sort of stuff, hierarchy of angels etc isn't in the bible anyway, it was made up/divinely inspired by later scholars.

i think it isn't really a physicall place. If our souls/spirits/ghosts(whatever you wanta call them)go somewhere, it's probably not a place where there is physical being. of course, i could be wrong, sicne i have no clue where heaven or hell is.
