Romanian Monasteries

even though I am a deist and I do not believe in a particular God, I still love the orthodox religion. I was born into it. My idea of a relaxing vacation is to spend a couple of weeks at a romanian monastery in Molodva (not the republic), especially, in the mountains (The Oriental Carpathians). The sense of peace there is unbelievable, you feel like you know how to define perfection. No tv, no radio, just you, nature, a book and good ol' God. :162:

Thanks for the note, I hope to get to Romania before I pass on to the next life and visit a few of their monasteries. I went to Russia and had the same experience you speak of.
Anyone who loves Orthodoxy - whether or not they are Orthodox, has something special.......

Lady Crimson,

Which monastery? I worked in Siret for a while and converted to Orthodoxy as a result. My wife is from Siret, I was married in Balinesti (close to Siret) and I go back to Bucovina as often as I can. My son's patron saint is Sf. Stefan cel Mare, so we obviously always make time to visit Putna and pray at his tomb.
I'd have to say that my favourite monastery is probably Voronet, though it's a close run thing. My favourite place in all the world, however, must be the cell of Sf. Daniil Sihastru near Putna - there's simply something otherworldly about that place. If the child my wife is currently expecting is a boy, his patron saint will be Daniil.

Joannicius,

If you ever do go to Romania, maybe you should get in touch with me and see if we can make our visits coincide? I'd be more than happy to show you the painted monasteries and other holy places in Bucovina and I can guarantee you that accomodation would be extremely cheap - plenty of family and friends would be willing to put you up if you were with me. The fact that I speak Romanian (and that my wife is, obviously, a native speaker) would probably come in handy also.

Haha! I live in Romania and have lived here all my life. Si stiu sa vorbesc romana si eu, logic. i'm from Bucharest but my grandmother is moldavian (she lives in Iasi). I love the monasteries in Bucovina mostly and yeah Voronet is really nice as Moldovita and Humor, Varatec, Neamt and Agapia. i haven't managed to see them all but I plan to. In my 15 years of life I have only seen a couple but I hope to get more time and the necessary funds to see them all.
